Meet Dr. Kirk Morgan | A Knowledgeable FST Academic Demonstrating Innovation in Teaching | Department of Mathematics

Dr. Kirk Morgan is a Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics. His area of specialization is Mathematics (Topology and Metric Space, General Relativity, Calculus) and Computer programming. Dr. Morgan has a passion for teaching and learning. He goes above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that his students understand what is being taught. His energetic disposition towards teaching encourages his students to excel and enjoy learning even in what is often perceived a challenging discipline.

Dr. Morgan employs innovative strategies to enhance the teaching and learning experience of his students and nurtures their critical thinking skills through questioning. His motto is ‘every student can and every student must learn’.

Different teaching methodologies are employed in Dr. Morgan’s classes such as investigating what his students already know and what deficits exist. Once the latter is identified, he moves to engaging his students to address concerns and then introduce new concepts. He also integrates many concrete models to represent abstract information. For example, Dr. Morgan uses common household items such as tissue rolls to represent a cylinder or a water dispenser cone to represent a cone to aid understanding of areas and volumes. To reinforce or assess how well concepts have been assimilated, homework, problem papers and examinations are given and students are given feedback so that they can reflect on their performance and make necessary amendments.

Mathematics can be very daunting and somewhat terrifying for some students but once a student with even basic competence enters his classroom, within minutes their outlook changes, because of the energetic, clear, sometimes comedic style of delivery by Dr. Morgan. He has such a commanding voice, he rarely uses a microphone and when he speaks his love, passion and excitement for the discipline transcends neighbouring hallways. At the end of a long exhaustive proof he famously says, “School is over my friend!" and "Always remember, the students who listens the most learns the most”. Storytelling and the sharing of his own journey are also used to motivate students.  Many of his students have even fallen in love with Mathematics and have changed their course of study from Medicine to Mathematics or Actuarial Science all because of him.
