Ms. Shanna-Lee Thomas, Chief Scientific Officer, is an asset to the Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory Centre for Marine Science, Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, The University of the West Indies Mona.
She displays strong character and a high standard of work as she confidently carries out the many facets of her job. Miss Thomas is not known to waver in the performance of her duties even when the workload gets heavy, she remains pleasant, polite and respectful to all. She has led on a range of research projects, most recently on a Queen Conch Spawning project. Despite her numerous duties she also finds time to use her artistic talents, taking responsibility for the many murals around the lab. She is an avid underwater photographer and provides the lab with excellent footage both to support science and for use on posters and advertisements. Miss Thomas recently took the lead in the submission of a grant proposal to the US Embassy for ~ US$35,000 which was successful, providing funds to conduct the conch hatchery project to start in Semester 2 at the DBML. She never hesitates to assist other officers, lecturers or graduate students with fieldwork and other project activities. As a result, she was awarded the Distinguished Staff Award For Excellence in the Performance of Technical Duties (MONATS) at the FST Annual Awards Ceremony hosted on November 9, 2023.
