The Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at The University of the West Indies, Mona (The UWI Mona) proudly congratulates Professor Emeritus Ishenkumba Kahwa on his recent appointment as Chairman of the Membership Advisory Committee (MAC) in Chemical Sciences of The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries (TWAS). His term of service will run from 2025 to 2026.
This appointment reflects Professor Kahwa’s longstanding contributions to the science and the high regard in which he is held within the global scientific community. As a member of the MAC, he will play a critical role in evaluating nominees for election to TWAS Membership in the field of chemical sciences. This appointment is not only a personal achievement for Professor Kahwa, but also a moment of pride for The University of the West Indies and the Caribbean region, as it demonstrates the global impact and excellence of our academic community.
TWAS is a merit-based science academy that promotes sustainable development in the Global South through support for scientific excellence, education, policy, and diplomacy. Membership in TWAS is reserved for scientists who have demonstrated outstanding international achievement and have made significant contributions to the advancement of science. Membership is for life and currently includes over 1,400 elected fellows from 112 countries — among them, 13 Nobel Laureates. Approximately 84% of TWAS members hail from developing countries.
Other FST academics associated with TWAS include Professor Michael Taylor, Dean, Faculty of Science and Technology, who was elected a TWAS Fellow in 2024, and Dr. Marvadeen Singh-Wilmot of the Department of Chemistry, who served as a TWAS Young Affiliate from 2010 to 2014 and is now a TWAS Young Affiliate Alumnus.
The Faculty congratulates Professor Kahwa once again on this remarkable achievement and thanks him for his continued leadership and service to science in the region and beyond.
