Remembering our Colleague | Dr. Eric Hyslop

The Faculty of Science and Technology and by extension The University of the West Indies, Mona, regrets to inform you that our former colleague, Dr. Eric Hylop, passed away on March 2, 2024.

Dr. Eric Hyslop, affectionately known as the "Students' Champion," is a highly respected Fish and Freshwater Biologist who served as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Life Sciences within the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of the West Indies, Mona (The UWI) from 1996 to 2019. Throughout his remarkable tenure, Dr. Hyslop epitomized a deep commitment to student-centered education, as evidenced by his extensive involvement in academic administration, teaching, research and mentorship.

Upon joining The UWI in 1996, Dr. Hyslop assumed various administrative roles that exemplified his dedication to fostering an enriching academic environment. He served as the Undergraduate Coordinator in the Department of Life Sciences from 1996 to 2000 and again from 2006 to 2007, to facilitate a seamless learning journey for undergraduate students. Additionally, he held the position of Coordinator for Graduate Studies in the same department from 2000 to 2006, guiding postgraduate students towards scholarly excellence. Dr. Hyslop also served as Chair of the Curriculum Committee from 2017 until his retirement in 2019. His exemplary academic leadership continued as he took on the role of Head of the Department of Life Sciences from 2007 to 2010, upholding an environment conducive to effective teaching and research. In recognition of his exceptional contributions, Dr. Hyslop was appointed Associate Dean in the Faculty of Science and Technology in 2010, a position he held until his retirement.

Throughout his tenure, Dr. Hyslop's teaching philosophy remained centered on students. He imparted knowledge and inspired critical thinking among students through a diverse range of biology courses, including Freshwater Biology, Functional Organization of Animals, Metabolic Physiology, Vertebrate Biology, and Water Pollution. Dr Hyslop supervised 24 MPhil students and 5 PhD students who secured meaningful employment in their respective fields.

 Dr. Hyslop has made a significant impact on the lives of thousands of students across all academic levels at The UWI Mona. Even after his retirement, Dr. Hyslop continued to serve by co-supervising several graduate students whom he had mentored throughout his illustrious career at The UWI. His legacy as the "Students' Champion" will endure as a reflection of his profound commitment to student-centered education, exemplary academic leadership, and steadfast pursuit of excellence in teaching and research.

The University extends condolences to the family and friends of the late Dr. Hyslop.
