Dr. Savanna Lloyd and Ms. Gillian A. Rowe, both from the University of the West Indies (UWI), have been honored with the 2024 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Caribbean Young Talent Awards. Dr. Lloyd, a lecturer in the Department of Physics at theUWI Mona, and Ms. Rowe, a PhD candidate in Food and Agriculture at UWI St. Augustine (and Alum of the Departmet of Life Sciences, the UWI Mona), were celebrated at the AAAS Caribbean Region Annual Meeting for their research and dedication to advancing science in the region. Both women received a grant endownment of USD10,000 each to further their research efforts.
Dr. Lloyd spoke about the confidence the award instilled in her, recognizing her ability to contribute meaningfully to scientific collaborations. Ms. Rowe highlighted how the award connects her to a global support network and empowers pre-doctoral women scientists. This recognition aligns with UNESCO's mission to close gender gaps in STEM, emphasizing the need to dismantle systemic biases and support young women in science.
