Dr. Owen Morgan Elected to Mastership of ACP

Professor of Medicine and Neurology and former Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Dr. Owen St. Clair Morgan, has been elected to Mastership of the American College of Physicians (ACP). The award will be presented at the College’s Annual Session to be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Thursday, April 6, 2006. Professor Morgan has also been elected to Honorary Membership in Alpha Omega Alpha, the national honour Medical Society in the United States and Canada.

Eintou Pearl Springer – Trinidadian Poet to Launch book in Jamaica

Eintou Pearl Springer, story teller, actress and author, will be in Jamaica from December 5-12 to promote her new collection of poems titled Loving the Skin I’m In. Her visit is sponsored by BWIA West Indies Ltd., the Trinidad and Tobago High Commission, the Marcus Garvey Movement and the Department of LIteratures in English, at the UWI.

Graduation Photographs/Video Tapes and DVD

The photographs taken at the 2005 Graduation ceremonies are now available and may be collected at the Public Relations Office during working hours 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Mondays – Fridays).
UWI Graduates, who are interested in video tapes or DVD of the 2005 Graduation Ceremonies, may contact the Public Relations Office at Tel. 977-5941/935-8348/935-8692. The cost is $1200 per tape and $2400 per DVD, for the particular day you graduated.

Professor of Research Measurement and Education Appointed

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Stafford Griffith as Professor of Research Measurement and Education in the Institute of Education at Mona, with effect from November 1. Professor Griffith has over 36 years of combined work experience in teaching, curriculum development, measurement and evaluation and programme planning and management.

The Department of Management Studies Colloquium/Seminar

The Department of Management Studies at the UWI Mona Campus will host a Colloquium/Seminar on External and Internal Threats to Hemispheric Security on Tuesday, December 8, from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre (SSLT). The Colloquium is being held as part of activities connected to its MSc. National Security and Strategic Studies Programme. There will be four sessions throughout the day: The first session, which will begin at 9:15 a.m. will deal with ‘Terrorism and Caribbean Tourism‘. Session 2, starting at 10:45 a.m.

The University Scholarship Examination 2006

Applications are being invited from individuals who wish to sit the 2006 University Scholarship Examination. The examination will be held on Monday February 27 and Tuesday, February 28 from 9.00 a.m. to 12 noon each day. The examination will comprise two general papers. The first paper will comprise a multiple choice section testing language and comprehension skills and a production section requiring summary and essay writing. Paper two will focus on spatial, structural perception and problem solving.

UWI Student wins International Essay Contest

A graduate student in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus Lesley Ann Dixon, was judged winner for the Caribbean Region in an International Essay Contest coordinated by the Organization of American States (OAS). The competition was part of activities leading up to the fourth summit of the heads of states and governments which took place in Mar Del Plata, Argentina on November 4 and 5.

UWI STUDENT WINS OAS ESSAY COMPETITION

Lesley Ann Dixon, a graduate student currently pursuing the MSc. in Management of Information Systems at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus was named winner for the Caribbean region in an essay competition organized by the Organization of American States (OAS). She was one of five students from around the hemisphere to have won the essay competition on the theme of the Fourth Summit of the Americas which was hosted by the OAS in Mar del Plata, Argentina on November 4 and 5, 2005.

A Study on Issues of Men and Gender in the Caribbean

A team of researchers associated with the UWI has received funding from CIDA’s Canada/Caribbean Gender Equality Programme through the University of the West Indies HIV/AIDS Response Programme (UWIHARP) to conduct a study on Issues of Men and Gender in the Caribbean. The team includes Clinical Psychologists, Dr Peter Weller and Rev. Stephen-Claude Hyatt, and Development Communication Specialist at CARIMAC, Patrick Prendergast.

All Vehicles Liable to Search

The University wishes to advise the members of the campus community and visitors that all vehicles leaving the Campus are liable to search (as provided for the UWI/Mona Campus (Security) Act of 2002). The Security providers will be exercising this option randomly in conjunction with the police, so as to better serve the campus and the campus community.
