Caribbean Nutrition Day - June 1
The Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute and its partners from the Ministries of Health in the Caribbean region, will host a Caribbean Nutrition Day (CND) celebration on 1 June 2005 under the theme Healthy Eating and Active Living. In Jamaica, the objective of the celebration this year is to promote increased consumption of fruits and encourage walking as a means of increasing physical activity.
CARIMAC Phone Lines
This is to advise that all the telephone lines at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) except 977-0898, are out of service. Contact can be made on that line and fax messages can be sent to 970-2472.
Closure of Car Park
The Students’ Car Park located next to the Department of Physics will be closed for approximately three months, from June 1 – August 30, to facilitate construction of a Juici Patties outlet. The UWI Mona apologises for any inconvenience which may result.
Marine Biology Programme
Applications are being invited for a one-week Marine Biology Programme July 2-8 being offered by Marine Biologist, Dayne Buddo in association with the Department of Life Sciences, UWI, Mona. Participants will spend one week exploring Jamaica's marine environment. Memorandum of Understanding
The Finance and General Purposes Committee, (F&GPC) Mona has approved the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus and the Lions Club of Kingston, Mona for the construction and equipping of a Resource Centre for specially challenged students attending the Mona Campus. Under the terms of the agreement, the Lions Club will provide funding for a two storey building for use as a multifaceted resource centre for students with disabilities who require special services and facilities.
New Professors
The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the appointment of five new professors at its Mona Campus. They are Drs. David Barker, Phyllis Coates-Beckford, Carlos Escoffery, Horace Fletcher and John Lennard. Dr. David Barker serves in the Department of Geography and Geology and has an international reputation as a Caribbean scholar with a broad focus on rural resources and environmental sustainability. He has undertaken research on small hillside farming systems and environmental degradation in the Yallahs valley and on the borders of the Cockpit Country. Dr.
Quality Enhancement Conference at UWI, St Augustine Campus
The University of the West Indies through the Quality Assurance Unit of the Board for Undergraduate Studies will host a Quality Enhancement Conference on June 8 and 9 under the theme: Quality Enhancement: Innovation and Change. The Conference will be held at the Learning Resource Centre at the St Augustine Campus in Trinidad. Quality is a major issue of concern to educators the world over, and this Conference invites Caribbean educators to share with international and regional presenters some of the many contemporary perspectives which relate to the quality discourse.
Summer Programme in Spanish and French
The Language Lab at the UWI Mona Campus is offering a summer programme in Spanish and French for the period June 6 to August 12. The ten week course will cover Spanish and French at the beginners and intermediate levels, as well as basic Spanish for medical purposes. The offerings depend on the demand. With a minimum number of eight persons per class and interested persons are invited to register for the Japanese summer course which begins on June 6 and ends on July 1. The classes will be held from Monday to Friday between 11.30 a.m. and 1.00 p.m.
William Dennis Memorial Lecture
The Fourth William Dennis Memorial lecture will take place on Thursday, June 9 at 6:00 p.m. The Lecture this year is being held under the Theme, Medical Ethics, the Law and Child Health. The lecture will be given by Professor Stephen Vasciannie, Professor of International Law, UWI, Mona, who will speak on the topic International Law and the Question of Abortion. Topics to be covered by other speakers include Informed Consent and the Paediatric Patient and Bioethics and the Law Applied to Conjoined Twins.
2006-07 Hurbert H. Humphrey Fellowship Programme
Applications are invited for the 2006-2007 Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Programme. This is a Fulbright programme that brings accomplished mid-career professionals from developing countries to the United States for study and related practical professional experiences. Fellows are nominated by the U.S. Embassy in Kingston based on their potential for national leadership. Please note that this program is not designed to lead to a degree. Rather, Fellows pursue tailored study programs at participating U.S. institutions.
