Department of Advanced Nursing Education Renamed
The Department of Advanced Nursing Education at the UWI Mona Campus has been renamed, the UWI School of Nursing, Mona. The name change was approved by the governing University Council, at its annual business meeting on April 8. Council endorsed the recommendation of the University Strategy Committee to rename the Department. The name change is effective immediately.
Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences Conference
The Seventh Conference of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences will be held on the UWI Mona Campus from May 17–19. The conference will feature research being undertaken by staff and graduate students in the Faculty at Mona, with researchers from The Cave Hill and St. Augustine Campuses of the UWI also expected to participate.
General Meeting
The Caribbean Tertiary Level Personnel Association will be having its General Meeting Wednesday, May 18, at 3:00 p.m. in the Mary Seacole Hall Senior Common Room. Members of this organization and persons who wish to become members are invited to attend.
Inaugural Rex Nettleford Prize in Cultural Studies
The Inaugural Rex Nettleford Prize in Cultural Studies has been awarded to Coordinator of the Graduate Colloquium in Cultural Studies and Administrative Officer in the Graduate Unit of the Faculty of Humanities and Education, Dr. Sonjah Stanley-Niaah. The award is tenable at the UWI and will fund Dr. Stanley-Niaah’s research into the respective roots and comparisons between Jamaican Dancehall and South African Kwaito Music.
Multi Disciplinary Conference
The School of Continuing Studies, UWI will host a Multi Disciplinary Conference on the British Virgin Islands, from May 26–28 in Paraquita Bay, BVI, under the theme ‘Beyond Walls: Multi-Disciplinary Perspectives’. This is the tenth in the School’s Country Conference series which focuses on the non-Campus countries within the UWI system. The aim is to stimulate and highlight research by academics and eminent persons in the non-campus country, by UWI staff based at campuses and by scholars in other institutions with interests in Caribbean Studies.
Records Management Workshops
Records Manager at the UWI Mona Campus, Sonia Black, and University Archivist, Elizabeth Williams, were in the British Virgin Islands earlier this year to conduct a series of Records Management Workshops for members of that country’s civil service. One hundred and eighty-four senior managers, supervisors and clerical officers attended the workshops which were organized as part of the British Virgin Islands’ development of the country’s integrated records management programme. Security Bulletin
Members of the University community are requested to exercise care when using the Mona Bowl, especially at nights and outside the halls of residence. Students who have parked in that area have been held up, cellular phones, and other valuables stolen.
Campus Security has provided the following guideline:
Do not occupy parked cars in the Mona Bowl longer than it takes to park and lock up the vehicle
After dark, do not stroll, walk or loiter in the Mona Bowl, particularly near the open lot opposite the halls of residence.
CCDC Launches New Publication
The Caribbean Child Development Centre, School of Continuing Studies and the Institute of Education, in collaboration with the Early Childhood Commission, will launch a new publication on Wednesday, May 11, at the Undercroft of the Senate Building at Mona at 6:00 p.m. The title of the publication is ‘Learning Outcomes for Early Childhood Development in the Caribbean: A Curriculum Resource Guide. The document represents a Caribbean approach to early childhood development curriculum development.
CETT Holds its Annual Directors Conference
The Caribbean Centre of Excellence for Teacher Training (CETT) will hold its Annual Directors Conference at the Knutsford Court Hotel in Kingston beginning Monday May 9, through to Friday, May 13. The Opening Ceremony for the Conference takes place on Tuesday, May 10 with guest speaker, Minister of Education, Youth and Culture, the Hon. Maxine Henry Wilson. The Centres of Excellence for Teacher Training is an hemispheric initiative with centres in South America, Central America and the Caribbean.
