Fourth “Caribbean Reasonings” Conference – June 16 - 18
The Centre for Caribbean Thought at the UWI Mona Campus in collaboration with the Africana Studies Department, Brown University, USA will host the fourth Annual “Caribbean Reasonings” Conference, entitled “The Thought of New World: The Quest for Decolonization” over the period June 16 – June 18 at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre. Professor Vaughan Lewis of the Institute of International Relations at the UWI, St. Augustine Campus and former Prime Minister of St. Lucia will be the guest speaker at the Opening Ceremony on June 16 at 6:00 p.m.
Pilot Course on Incorporating On-line Learning in Distance Education
Work is to begin on the development of a pilot course on incorporating on-line learning in distance education to be undertaken by the University of Technology, Jamaica and the University of the West Indies. The work is part of an ongoing programme of activities being undertaken by the Caribbean Universities Project for Integrated Distance Education (CUPIDE). CUPIDE brings together five universities across the English, Dutch and French-speaking Caribbean in a collaborative distance education project.
ACHEA Conference
The Fifth Annual Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Association of Caribbean Higher Education Administrators (ACHEA) will take place from July 6-9 at the Tobago Hilton Hotel. The theme of the conference is Innovation and Action for Success in Higher Education. The conference will take the form of concurrent sessions concentrated around five sub-themes: Information and Communications Technology, Human Resource Development and Change, Financial Management, Fundraising and Accountability; Marketing, Recruitment and Communications and Students: Managing the Student Experience.
CARIMAC Summer School Programme
The Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) is announcing new registration deadlines for its 2005 Summer School Programme which will run from June 6 – July 29 in Kingston and August 9 – 27 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The submission date for the registration form for the July course is Friday, June 24, and for the August Montego Bay courses registration will close on Friday, July 29. The summer programme covers a range of interests including sports, video production, graphic design, community mobilization, health promotion, advertising, public relations or public speaking.
Professional Certificate Course in Alternative Energy
The Mona Institute of Applied Sciences in collaboration with the Department of Physics will mount an intensive professional certificate course in alternative energy, beginning Monday, June 20. The course is the first of its kind and will be of particular interest to energy managers, engineers, technicians, environmentalists and architects, who will now be able to access local and innovative knowledge on alternative energy sources being explored worldwide.
Quality Enhancement Conference at UWI, St Augustine Campus
The University of the West Indies through the Quality Assurance Unit of the Board for Undergraduate Studies will host a Quality Enhancement Conference on June 8 and 9 under the theme: Quality Enhancement: Innovation and Change. The Conference will be held at the Learning Resource Centre at the St Augustine Campus in Trinidad. Quality is a major issue of concern to educators the world over, and this Conference invites Caribbean educators to share with international and regional presenters some of the many contemporary perspectives which relate to the quality discourse.
Seminar on the Socio-Economic and Cultural Impact of Caribbean Migration to Belize and Honduras
The University of the West Indies, through its Latin American Caribbean Centre hosts its Seventh Annual Seminar on the Jamaican Diaspora and its impact both locally and regionally from July 8 - 9. This year’s seminar will focus on ‘The Socio-economic and Cultural Impact of Caribbean Migration to Belize and Honduras”. The seminar series was launched in 2000 with a view to tracing the socio-economic and cultural impact of the intra-regional movement of English-speaking Caribbean nationals on both the receiving and sending countries.
Sixth General Meeting of the Caribbean Academy of Sciences
The Sixth General Meeting of the Caribbean Academy of Sciences, Jamaica Chapter will be held on June 9, at 2.30 p.m. in the Chemistry Lecture Theatre, C5. All members and interested persons are invited to attend. Persons who have been nominated for membership may pay their dues at the meeting and interested persons may apply for membership. Members who have not renewed their membership for the year 2005 are requested to do that during the meeting. The keynote address titled “Fight Against Heart Disease in Jamaica” will be delivered by Professor Charles Denbow, Department of Medicine.
Two-day Workshop on Protocol and Special Events Planning
The Public Relations Office, UWI, Mona presents: Proceed with Confidence in a Globalised Environment: a two-day workshop on Protocol and Special Events Planning on Tuesday, June 28, and Wednesday, June 29 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The venue is the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. Topics to be covered include National and University Protocol, Official Forms of Address, Order of Precedence, Realistic Budgeting, Seating Arangements, the Art of Fine Dining and much more. Presenters include Ambassador Madge Barrett, Dr. Oswald Harding and Mrs. Marigold Harding.
UWI Student Selected for Meeting of Nobel Laureates
Miss Xsitaaz Chadee, a postgraduate student at the UWI St. Augustine Campus in Trinidad is one of five outstanding young scientists selected from developing countries to attend the annual meeting of Nobel Laureates in Physics, Chemistry and Medicine to be held in Lindau, Germany from June 26 to July 1. Miss Chadee will participate in round table discussions on interdisciplinary topics. The Lindau meetings are organised by a voluntary committee, and are aimed at giving young scientists an opportunity for personal interactions with Nobel Laureates.
