Two-day Workshop on Protocol and Special Events Planning Rescheduled

UWI Launches Regional Centre for Disaster Risk Reduction

In response to the long recognised need to develop in the region multidisciplinary training and research in disaster management and risk mitigation, the University of the West Indies on Friday, July 8, 2005, launched the Centre for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction which will provide the requisite training and technical expertise to complement the work of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA).

ACHEA Annual Conference General Meeting

The Fifth Annual Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Association of Caribbean Higher Education Administrators (ACHEA) will take place from July 6-9 at the Tobago Hilton Hotel. The theme of the conference is ‘Innovation and Action for Success in Higher Education.’ The conference will take the form of concurrent sessions concentrated around five sub-themes: Information and Communications Technology, Human Resource Development and Change; Financial Management, Fundraising and Accountability; Marketing, Recruitment and Communications and Students: Managing the Student Experience.

Caribbean Internship Project

Twenty-six students from the three campuses of the University of the West Indies will travel throughout the region this summer to participate in the Caribbean Internship Project. This is a partnership established between the Centre for Population, Community and Social Change, an outreach thrust of the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work at Mona and the Caribbean Support Initiative. The participating countries include Dominica, St. Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica.

Dr. Peter Figueroa now Honorary Professor

The University of the West Indies’ Appointments Committee has approved the recommendation that the title “Honorary Professor’ in the area of Epidemiology and HIV/AIDS, on attachment to the School for Graduate Studies and Research, should be conferred on Chief, Epidemiology and AIDS at the Ministry of Health in Jamaica, Dr. Peter Figueroa.

Human Resource Management Division Relocated

As of Monday, July 4 Miss Deborah Charles, Senior Assistant Registrar and the staff of Staffing and Employment Development will be located in the newly refurbished complex at 4 Gibraltar Camp Way.
Mr. Raymond Eytle, Senior Assistant Registrar, Employee Relations, Compensation, Environment Health and Safety and his staff in the Labour Relations and HRMIS sections will be housed on the ground floor of the Assembly Hall Building.
We invite you to visit us and familiarize yourself with both areas of the Human Resource Management Division.

Registration Packages for New Students

Persons awaiting CAPE/GCE ‘A’ level results who have already received offers from the University of the West Indies, Mona are hereby advised that their registration packages may be collected from the Assembly Hall from August 15 - September 6. All other persons who have received offers including (Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences - Preliminary) may collect their packages from the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre (SSLT) from July 27-29 and August 2-5 and the Assembly Hall from August 8 - September 6.

Seventh Intra-regional Migration Seminar

The University of the West Indies, through its Latin American Caribbean Centre hosts its Seventh Annual Seminar on the Jamaican Diaspora and its impact both locally and regionally from July 8 - 9. The Opening ceremony will take place on Friday July 8 at 7:00 p.m. at the Undercroft of the Senate Building, UWI and on Saturday, the session will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre, N1. This year’s seminar will focus on ‘The Socio-economic and Cultural Impact of Caribbean Migration to Belize and Honduras”.

Theological Education and the Mission of the Church

The Executive Committee of the World Conference of the Association of Theological Institutions (WOCATI) will be meeting in Jamaica from July 2 – 7. WOCATI is a worldwide theological organization which is associated with the United Theological College of the West Indies and St. Michaels Theological College in Jamaica, St. John Vianney in Trinidad and Codrington College in Barbados. In connection with the visit, the United Theological College of the West Indies will be hosting a symposium with the theme, “Theological Education and the Mission of the Church” on Monday, July 4, at 5:30p.m.

UWI’s HIV/AIDS Response Programme

One of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, MERCK, is making a significant contribution to the Caribbean Fight Against HIV-AIDS by funding an important survey to be carried out by UWI’s HIV/AIDS Response Programme – UWI HARP. The research is intended to help design new strategies in the campaign to encourage earlier diagnosis and treatment of the disease by reducing the prevailing stigma attached to people living with the disease. The new study will be funded by a grant of over J$4.8 million from both MERCK & Co. INC and its Caribbean subsidiary.
