4th Annual A. Z. Preston Memorial Lecture
In celebration of the life of the late Dr. Aston Zachariah Preston (1925-1986), former Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies (1974-1986), the A.Z. Preston Hall presents its fourth annual A.Z. Preston Memorial Lecture “A Cut Above the Rest”, on Thursday, April 14, at 2:30 p.m. in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI Mona.
7th Biennial Conference
The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work, the Social Welfare Training Centre, UWI, Mona in association with the Association of Social Work Educators and the Jamaica Association of Social Workers present the 7th Biennial Conference of Caribbean and International Social Work Educators from August 8-11. The theme of the conference is Advancing Social Work Praxis in an Era of Global Transformation.

The Instructional Development Unit realizes that throughout the academic year, staffs are under pressure to achieve their objectives within a limited time and at the end of the semester that pressure is compounded by the meeting of deadlines and especially the marking of scripts for faculty.
Journal of Social and Economic Studies
The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies plans to publish a special edition of the journal of Social and Economic Studies (SES) focusing on the Caribbean and Pacific Regions in the Global Political Economy. SES is a leading refereed academic journal published at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus in Kingston since 1953.
The special journal issue will be edited by a cross-regional and multi-disciplinary team of academics drawn from the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the University of the South Pacific (USP).
Launch of Professor Carolyn Cooper's Book
UWI Distinguished Fellow, the Most Hon Edward Seaga, will launch Professor Carolyn Cooper's book, Sound Clash: Jamaican Dancehall Culture at Large on Tuesday, April 19 at 6:00 p.m. at the Undercroft of the Senate Building. Mr. Cordel Green, Executive Director of the Jamaican Broadcasting Commission, will chair the event which is expected to attract a number of the artists whose work is critiqued in the book. The public is invited to attend and admission is free.
Launch of the Creating Alternative Wellness Spaces Campaign
The launch of the Creating Alternative Wellness Spaces Campaign will be held on Wednesday, April 13 at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication, (CARIMAC) beginning at 11 a.m. The campaign is designed to address the provision of suitable spaces for students and staff to engage in physical outdoor studying and recreational activities. The campaign is being undertaken by the Wellness Task Force at the UWI Mona Health Centre, partnering with students at CARIMAC, the Maintenance Services Department, the Projects Office and the Forestry Department.
Mona Campus – Partnerships for Development
The Digicel Foundation is to fund a Chair in Telecommunication Policy and Management to be located at the Mona School of Business. This was announced by Chairman of the Foundation, Mr. Harry Smith, at a reception to honour “Partners of the Mona Campus” on Thursday, April 7 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. Addressing those present, Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Mona Campus Professor the Hon.
MSc. Accounting Programme
Candidates are invited to apply for entry to the MSc. Accounting Programme being offered at the UWI Mona Campus. This is a taught programme which will be offered on a part-time and full-time basis.
Second Semester Examinations
UWI students who will be writing second semester examinations in April 25 - May 11, 2005 are being requested to collect their examination cards at the Undercroft of the Senate Building, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Candidates must present a valid UWI identification card for this purpose. Candidates are advised to check their cards carefully and to report any errors to the Student Records Section of the Registry, where verification will be done and a new card supplied by the Examination Section if necessary.
Training Seminar for Student Leaders
The Finance and General Purposes Committee (F&GPC) at the UWI Mona Campus has agreed to the implementation of a one-week training seminar for student leaders. This will be a pilot activity which, if successful, will inform the development of an institute for student leaders which would recruit potential Caribbean leaders and nurture their development.
