Course in Methods of Policy Practice

Seven students who are members of a new “Methods
of Policy Practice” course designed by University
of the West Indies lecturer in Social Work, Peta-
Anne Baker, recently took part in a one-week
study tour to New York City and Hartford,
Connecticut. The group participated in the annual
Social Work at the United Nations Day, the theme
of which was “Policy Issues facing Women in
Poverty”. They heard presentations on indigenous
women issues, human trafficking and women’s
mental health by representatives of agencies
working on these issues.

Donations

Professor Peter Fletcher, Department of Surgery,
Radiology, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care
recently donated two hundred thousand dollars
($200,000) to the Cardiothoracic Consultation
Fund and thirty five thousand dollars ($35,000)
to the Chapel Organ Fund. The cheques were
presented to Dr. Paul Ramphal, lecturer in
cardiothoracic surgery and Mrs. Rodina Reid,
Assistant Registrar, Secretariat. The proceeds
were the collection taken at the Memorial Service
for the late Carole Fletcher.

Dr. Gerard A. Quash

Dr. Gerard A. Quash, former Director of Research at the National Institute for Health and Medical
Research Lyon, France will be visiting the
Faculty of Medical Sciences from March 21-25. He
will conduct a seminar entitled “Chemorisistence
in Cancer” on Monday, March 21 beginning at 4:00
p.m. at the Tropical Medicine Research Institute
Seminar Room. On Wednesday, March 23 Dr. Quash
will participate in a Clinicopathological
Conference at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre
beginning at 5:00 p.m. He will speak on “Septic

Second Semester Examinations

UWI students who will be writing second semester
examinations from April – May 2005 are being
requested to collect their examination cards at
the Undercroft of the Senate Building, effective
Monday, March 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Candidates must present a valid UWI
identification card for this purpose. Candidates
are advised to check their cards carefully and to
report any errors to the Student Records Section
of the Registry, where verification will be done
and a new card supplied by the Examination

The Centre for Caribbean Thought

The Centre for Caribbean Thought at the UWI Mona campus will host its fourth Caribbean Reasonings using the theme “The thought of the new world: the quest for decolonization” over the period June 16 – June 18 at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre.

TMRI Intervention Study

The Tropical Medicine Research Institute (TMRI)
UWI is now recruiting healthy women to
participate in focus group discussions on
Jamaican women’s attitudes, knowledge and beliefs
about healthy lifestyle including exercise and
dietary intake. These discussions will take
place up to May 2005. This information will help
in the development of a diet and exercise pilot
intervention study to take place later in the
year. You may be eligible for the discussions if
you are not pregnant or breast-feeding; have no
history of high blood pressure, heart disease,

CARIMAC Summer School 2005

Registration is now open for the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) 2005 summer school programme which will run from June 6 – July 29 in Kingston and August 9 – 27 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. This year 22 courses will be offered covering areas of print and broadcast journalism, media design and production, public relations, and communication for social and behaviour change.

IDU Workshop

The Instructional Development Unit (IDU) will host another in its workshop series on Wednesday, March 16 beginning at 12:30 p.m. in the IDU Training Room (upstairs the Inter-Faculty Lecture Theatre). The title of the workshop is Course Evaluation II - Designing Instruments, Implementing and Marking.

Mary Seacole Hall Evening of Excellence

Mary Seacole Hall, UWI Mona will host an Evening of Excellence: Gospel Edition, under the patronage of Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Sunday, March 20 at 7.00 p.m. at the Assembly Hall. Among the artistes performing will be Bless aka Prodigal Son, Katalys Crew, Judy Mowatt, Kevin Downswell, and others. MC is Nadine Blair. Maternal Mental Health and Well-being

Dr. Robb Whitley, McGill University, Canada will present a lecture entitled “Maternal Mental Health and Well-being in Caribbean Migrants in Montreal, Canada.” The lecture will be held on Monday, March 14 in the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI at 3:45 p.m. The public is invited.
