42nd Regional Four Month Course
The Graduation exercise for the 42nd Regional Four Month course in the Principles and Practice of Social Work will take place at the Social Welfare Training Centre on Thursday, April 28 beginning at 5.30 p.m. This year, there are some 54 participants from five countries – Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Montserrat and Jamaica. The participants represent a wide range of social services, including persons in the field of health, correctional services, policing, counselling, religion, community development, service clubs and youth work.
Caribbean and International Social Work Educators Conference
The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work, the Social Welfare Training Centre, UWI, Mona in association with the Association of Social Work Educators and the Jamaica Association of Social Workers present the 7th Biennial Conference of Caribbean and International Social Work Educators from August 8-11. The theme of the conference is Advancing Social Work Praxis in an Era of Global Transformation.
Colombia Carnival at the UWI
The Latin American - Caribbean Centre in collaboration with the Embassy of Colombia invites you to experience Colombian Carnival and listen to Colombia Mento Music at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts on Thursday, April 28 from 12 noon to 1.00 pm.
The event will feature scenes from the Carnaval de Barranquilla and the Hermanos Mc Lean will perform at this PSCCA lunchtime concert. Members of the public are invited and admission is free.
H. R. Needs Assessment
The University of the West Indies, Tertiary Level Institutions Unit will begin the process of conducting a Needs Assessment of CARICOM countries: the Tertiary Education Sector Response at a Workshop which will run from April 25-27 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre.
Research Ethics Conference
The Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies and the University of Miami Bioethics Programme in association with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the National Health Fund (NHF) will be presenting a conference on Research Ethics from April 28-30. The theme is “Research Ethics a Global Concern – Regional Solutions”.
The objectives of the conference are: to build awareness of the importance of research ethics across the broad spectrum of research activity and to lend support to or encourage the creation of Ethics Review Committees.
The School of Education
The School of Education at the UWI Mona Campus will present a forum entitled ‘Developing a Literate Population: the Challenge for the 21st Century on Tuesday, May 3 at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, beginning at 5.00 p.m. This will be the thirteenth in the series of forums that examine critical issues in education. The forum will be addressed by speakers who are specialists in the area and include persons from the primary and secondary school system, teachers colleges, the University of Technology and the UWI itself.
UWI Alumni AGM
The UWI Alumni Association (Jamaica Chapter) will hold its annual general Meeting on Thursday, May 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the Blue Room, Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. UWI Lecturer Granted US Patent
Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Education, at the UWI Mona Campus, Dr. Halden Morris, has been granted a United States Patent, along with Rhona Miller, for his invention of a portable mini clothes dryer and hair dryer. The device is designed to fit into a standard suitcase and is the result of extensive work over the past several years. Dr.
Occupational Safety and Health Expo
Safety and Emergency Management Systems will host a Occupational Safety and Health Exposition on Friday, April 22, from 10:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. at the lawns of the Senate Building. Participants will include the representatives from the UWI Mona Campus, private, public sector and non governmental organizations. The aim of the exposition is to increase the awareness of the campus community and its neighbours of hazards and the measures which may be taken to eliminate them and/or mitigate their effects.
