SALISES 6th Annual Conference
“Governance, Institutions and Economic Growth: Reflections on Arthur Lewis’ Theory of Economic Growth is the theme of the Sixth Annual Conference being organised by the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies over the period March 17 – 18 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. Professor Norman Girvan of the Institute of International Relations at the UWI St. Augustine Campus will be the Guest Speaker at the opening ceremony which takes place on Thursday, March 17 at 9.00 a.m. This will be followed by a plenary session ‘Reflections on Sir Arthur Lewis’.
18-Month Distance Certificate Interdisciplinary Programme
The Centre for Gender and Development Studies, Regional Coordinating Unit is offering an 18-Month Distance Certificate Interdisciplinary Programme in Gender and Development Studies. According to the Centre, this field of study is of particular importance in contemporary Caribbean society because it deals with social, economic, political, and personal issues and is extremely relevant and useful not just in providing knowledge and skills for a variety of work situations but also valuable for understanding oneself and one’s identity and rights in a society.
Applications open for Postgraduate Scholarships 2005/06
Applications are now open for Postgraduate Scholarships for 2005/06. Preference will be given to graduates with at least an upper second class honours degree. Scholarships are tenable at any Campus of The University of the West Indies, and are normally for a period of two years. Application forms and details of awards are available from the Assistant Registrar, Office of Graduate Studies and Research on the relevant Campuses and at the UWI website. The closing date for receipt of applications is March 31, 2005.
Call for Papers – Centre for Caribbean Thought
Proposals for papers, panels, roundtables and exhibitions are invited for the Centre for Caribbean Thought, UWI, Mona 4th ‘Caribbean Reasonings entitled The Thought of New World: The Quest for Decolonization. The “Caribbean reasoning” will take place from June 16 - June 18 at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre. Deadline for submission of a 200 word abstract is March 31. Call for Papers – FMS Annual Research Conference
Abstracts are invited for oral and poster presentations at the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS) Annual Research Conference to be held November 9-11, 2005. The conference venue is the Main Medical Lecture Theatre in the Faculty. A number of conference prizes are available as well as other prizes for students. Commemoration Dinner – March 11
Professor E. Nigel Harris Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies will deliver the Keynote Address at the Commemoration Dinner being held in honour of Professor Gerald Lalor on Friday, March 11 at 7:00 p.m. at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. The dinner is the highpoint of the 2005 Commemoration Celebrations. Tickets are available at the Public Relations Office, UWI, Mona.
Mona Council Meeting
The regular meeting of the Mona Campus Council will be held on Friday, March 11 in the Council Room at the Campus. Highpoint of the meeting will be a report from the Principal of the Mona Campus on developments at the Institution over the last academic year. Campus Council will also receive reports on research and other activities being undertaken by the various Departments as well as on the financial status of the Campus.
Seminar on Evaluating Tax Policy and Economic Development
The Department of Economics in the Faculty of Social Sciences will host a seminar entitled ‘Evaluating Tax Policy and Economic Development: An International Perspective’ on Monday, March 7 beginning at 2.30 p.m. The presenters will be Professor Roy Bahl, Dean of the Andrew Young School and Professor Sally Wallace from the Department of Development Economics at Georgia State University. The seminar will be held in the Mona School of Business Executive Lecture Theatre. Interested persons are invited to attend.
UWI Library Seeks to Strengthen Conservation and Preservation Capability
The UWI Library is exposing its bindery staff to modern binding and conservation techniques. In addition, it will undertake an analysis of the Bindery’s workflow, and current binding practices in an effort to re-engineer and reorganize the unit for greater productivity and efficiency.
2005 Fulbright Foreign Researchers
Two members of staff at the UWI Mona Campus have been selected as 2005 Fulbright Foreign Researchers under the Central American/Caribbean Fulbright Foreign Researcher Programme sponsored by the US Department of State. They are Senior Lecturer in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medical Sciences, and Consultant to the UWI Diabetes Outreach Project, Dr. Dalip Ragoobirsingh and Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Dr. Helen Asemota. They are the only two Jamaicans selected for the prestigious award this calendar year.
