Annual Awards Ceremony for Undergraduate Studies

The Annual Awards Ceremony for Undergraduate Students of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences will be held on Thursday, March 3 at 3:00 p.m. in the New Chemistry Lecture Theatre. The keynote speaker will be PVC Professor Elsa Leo Rhynie.

Career Month

The Office of Placement and Career Services is currently celebrating Career Awareness month under the theme. “The CARICOM Single Market and Economy – Am I Job ready?” Career Month ends with the Annual Careers Expo which will begin on Thursday, March 3 with the opening ceremony at 10:00 a.m. at the Undercroft. The viewing of booths by UWI students/staff and invited institutions will be from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Assembly Hall and on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the same venue.

Collection of Examination Cards

The UWI Mona Campus has put in place arrangements for the collection of examination cards for second semester examinations which will be held over the period April 26 to May 11, 2005. Candidates writing examinations during April-May 2005 are requested to collect their examination cards at the Undercroft of the Senate Building, effective Monday, March 21 from 9:00 a.m. Candidates must present a valid UWI identification card for this purpose.

Faculty of Social Sciences to host Leadership Forum

The new Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the five declared candidates contesting for the leadership of the People’s National Party (PNP) are scheduled to participate in six separate political leadership forums on the Mona Campus between March 3 and May 5.
The series kick off on Thursday, March 3 with newly elected JLP Leader, Senator Bruce Golding.
The second forum on March 10 will feature PNP Vice-president and Minister of National Security Dr. the Hon. Peter Phillips in the Undercroft of the Senate Building.

The Department of Literatures in English, Mona will host Olive Senior re
ading her work on Wednesday, March 2 at 6:00 p.m. in the Multi Functional Room, Main Library. The University community and the public are invited.

Professor E. Nigel Harris

Newly appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies Professor E. Nigel Harris was installed in the post at a special ceremony held at the UWI’s St Augustine Campus in Trinidad last Saturday, February 26. Professor Harris assumed office in October last year in succession to Professor the Hon Rex Nettleford. A Guyanese by birth, Professor Harris was previously Dean and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, USA. A Medical Doctor by profession, he is internationally known for his work as a Rheumatologist.

Quality Assurance Unit

The Quality Assurance Unit in the Office of the Board for Undergraduate Studies will be hosting its second Quality Forum, Effective Assessment – A Mark of Quality on March 8, 2005 from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon in the Multifunctional Room of the Main Library. Two to receive Distinguished Awards at Diabetes Conference

Dr. Alexander Kalache and Ron Raab are recipients of Awards to be presented at the 11th Annual International Diabetes Conference to be held from March 3-6 at the Jamaica Conference Centre.

Annual Bob Marley Lecture

The Annual Bob Marley Lecture organized by the Reggae Studies Unit, UWI will take place on Friday, February 25 at 6:00 p.m. at the Undercroft of the Senate Building. The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Pat Anderson and is entitled “Inna Govament Yard: The Challenge of Community and Housing in Kingston’s Inner city”. The public is invited.

Caribbean Luminaries for 2005

The American Foundation of the University of the West Indies has named three Jamaicans in its list of thirteen Caribbean Luminaries for 2005. They are, Managing Director of LASCO, Lascelles Chin; Head of the Port Authority of Jamaica, Noel Hylton and Boxer Mike McCallum. Caribbean Luminaries are individuals from the past 100 years who have left their indelible mark on the Caribbean region and the world. Both individually and as a group, these luminaries signify the progress made during the 20th century and represent some of the significant contributions made by the Caribbean Diaspora.
