Second Annual Graduate Students’ Conference

The Mona Association of Postgraduate Students (MAPS) in collaboration with the Research Consortium will be hosting the Second Annual Graduate Students’ Conference, on the theme Promoting Development through Research and Innovation. The conference is to be held at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus from Thursday, February 17 to Friday, February 18. The Opening Ceremony will be on Thursday, February 17 at 10:00 a.m. at the Undercroft, Senate Building. The keynote speaker at the opening ceremony will be the Most Hon.

Seventh Conference of the Faculty of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences

The Seventh Conference of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences will be held on the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies on May 17-19. The conference will feature research being undertaken by staff and graduate students in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences. The objectives of the conference are: - to provide a forum whereby the public may be made aware of the research activities of the Faculty and to highlight the work being undertaken in Pure and Applied Sciences at the University among professional colleagues in an effort to foster multidisciplinary investigations.

VC Proposes Centre for Chinese Language, Culture

UWI Vice Chancellor Professor E. Nigel Harris has proposed the establishment of a Caribbean Centre for Chinese Language, Culture, Science and Technology at the University. He has also proposed that a Chinese University in the People’s Republic of China similarly establish a Centre for Caribbean Language, Culture, Science and Technology. The proposal was made during the visit of Vice President of the Peoples Republic of China, Mr. Zeng Quinhong who headed a large delegation of Chinese Public and Private Sector officials on a visit to the UWI Mona Campus.

11th Annual International Conference on Diabetes

The UWI’s Diabetes Outreach Project (UDOP), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)/World Health Organization (WHO) and the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI) will host its 11th International Conference on Diabetes from March 3 to 6 at the Jamaica Conference Centre, Kingston, Jamaica. Caribbean Regional Conference

Deputy Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons Hon. Jean Augustine will deliver a keynote address at the Caribbean Regional Conference on Philanthropy hosted by the UWI Development and Endowment Fund on Thursday, February 24, at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston. Ms. Augustine, who is also Special Advisor on Grenada to Canadian Prime Minister, Paul Martin, will address the opening plenary session of the conference on the topic “The Relevance of Philanthropy in Developing Nations”.

Chinese Delegation to Visit UWI

Vice President of the Peoples Republic of China, His Excellency Mr. Zeng Quinhong will head a large delegation of Chinese public and private sector officials who will visit the UWI Mona Campus on Thursday, February 3. Mr. Zeng Quinhong is the highest ranking Chinese official to visit Jamaica. While at the Mona Campus, he will meet with senior members of the University community, and also tour sections of the Campus.

Commemoration Service

The Annual Commemoration Service, Mona Campus will be held in the University Chapel on Sunday, February 20, 2005 at 9:00 a.m. The service will be conducted by Rev. Fr. Orville Shields and Rev. Dr. Burchell Taylor will deliver the sermon

Music Courses

Regional Workshop on “Gender Youth and Political Participation

United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Barbados/Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), in partnership with the Directorate of Gender Affairs in Antigua & Barbuda will be convening a regional workshop on “Gender Youth and Political Participation” in Antigua & Barbuda from April 11-13. This workshop is part of the UNDP/UNIFEM project “Gender Mainstreaming: Strengthening the Participation of Women in Politics in Caribbean Political and Parliamentary Processes”.
