The UWI Alumni Association (UWIAA) wishes to advise that the office phone number is 927-1583. The 2005 Commemoration Celebrations and Alumni Week will be held from February 17 - 27, 2005 and all graduates are specially invited to attend the Gala Dinner at the Mona Lodge on Friday, February 18 at 7 p.m. at the Mona Lodge and the Grand Concert and Pelican Awards on Sunday, February 20 at 6 p.m. at the Assembly Hall.

UWI Migration Seminar Series to Feature Belize

The Caribbean Migration Experience in Belize and the Bay Islands of Honduras will be featured this year in the Seventh Seminar in the Annual Intra-Regional Migration Series which examines issues arising from the massive migration from the English-speaking Caribbean to Latin America over the past hundred years.
The seminar planned for July 7-9 on the Mona Campus is coordinated by the UWI Latin American - Caribbean Centre (LACC). All persons who have an interest in this subject are invited to contact the LACC (876) 702-4721 or email annette.insanally@uwimona.edu.jm

11th Annual International Conference on Diabetes

The UWI’s Diabetes Outreach Project, UDOP, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)/World Health Organization (WHO) and the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI) will host its 11th International Conference on Diabetes from March 3 to 6 at the Jamaica Conference Centre, Kingston, Jamaica. Annual Research Day

The Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies will host its Annual Research Day on January 27 and 28 with the theme ‘Natural Hazards, Disasters and Sustainable Development’. Research Day will be declared open by Governor General, Sir Howard Cooke at the Opening Ceremony which takes place on Thursday, January 27 at the Undercroft of the Senate Building. The guest speaker at the ceremony will be Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. the Hon. Omar Davies. Research Day features a two day exhibition on Research underway, at the Mona Campus.

Applications for Mona Campus Research Fellowships

The Office of Planning and Institutional Research (Office of the Principal) is currently accepting applications for Mona Campus Research Fellowships for the academic year, 2004/2005. The fellowships are open to full-time permanent members of the Mona Campus staff and provide for salary and other remuneration – book grant, study and travel grant - for up to 2 years.

Cooperation Agreement Signed between UWI Mona Campus and the ICAJ

Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Mona Campus Professor the Honourable Kenneth Hall and President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Jamaica (ICAJ), Linroy Marshall signed a Cooperation Agreement between the UWI Mona Campus and the ICAJ on Tuesday, January 18 in the Council Room at Mona. In his remarks, Professor Hall extended warmest congratulations to the ICAJ on the achievement of a significant milestone – forty years of service to Jamaica. He said that the signing of the Agreement marked a new point of departure in the fulfillment of their respective mission.

Jimmy Cliff to Perform at UWI - February 4

The Institute of Caribbean Studies collaborated with internationally acclaimed performer and singer Jimmy Cliff to launch his latest album ‘Black Magic’ at a function held in the Council Room at the UWI Mona Campus on Thursday. The institute also announced that Jimmy Cliff would be the featured artiste at the inaugural concert in the UWI Distinguished Concert Series, which will take place on Friday, February 4 in the Oriental Gardens on the UWI Mona Campus. Other performers will include Bob Andy, the L’Acadco Dancers and the Akwaaba Drummers.

Lions Club of Mona

The Lions Club of Mona is collaborating with the University of the West Indies to construct and equip a Modern Resource Centre for Physically Challenged Students on the UWI’s Mona Campus. The Centre is expected to cost some J$28 million and the Club is responsible for fundraising, project design and development. Fundraising activities are now underway with construction anticipated to begin in the second quarter of 2005 for completion in January 2006.

Ninth Annual Derek Gordon Seminar

The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work will host the Ninth Annual Derek Gordon Seminar on Saturday, January 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. The Derek Gordon Seminar presents the research work of postgraduate students in the Department. This year, the theme of the seminar is Dimensions of Disadvantage and Exclusion. Topics to be presented include Household Composition and Economic Survival Amongst the Urban Poor, The Education of Hearing Impaired Children at the Primary School Level and Abuse in Intimate Relationships: Case Studies of Jamaican Men.
