Fifth General Meeting
“Science, University and the Community – a Jamaican Perspective” is the title of the keynote address which will be delivered by Professor. Ronald Young, Dean of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, UWI, Mona Campus during the fifth general meeting of the Caribbean Academy of Sciences, Jamaica Chapter. The meeting will be held on Thursday, February 24, in the Chemistry Lecture Theatre, C5, beginning at 2:00 p.m. All members and interested persons are invited to attend.
Graduate Recruitment Programme
The Office of Placement and Career Services has organized a Graduate Recruitment Programme during which final year students will be interviewed by employers who require candidates to fill permanent vacancies in their organizations. The programme will be held from March 29 to April 29. Members of the graduating class who would like to participate in the recruitment programme should collect a package from the Office of Placement and Career Services, the Commuting Students Lounge or their hall of residence. The deadline for registration is Monday, February 28.
Inaugural Lecture of Professor Fay Durrant
The Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI, Mona will host the Inaugural Lecture of Professor Fay Durrant on Thursday, February 17 at 5:00 p.m. at the Undercroft, the Senate Building, UWI. Her lecture is entitled “The factors which have impacted on access to information in the Caribbean 1980 onwards” Please call 927-2944, 2322 for any further information.
Workshop on Preservation Management
The UWI Library, Mona, in collaboration with the Department of Library & Information Studies and the National Library of Jamaica, will host a Workshop on Preservation Management for librarians, archivists and records managers in the Caribbean. This will be held from March 9-10, at the UWI Main Library, Mona. Space is limited to 50 persons.

Workshops on Community Tourism and National Parks Management
The School for Graduate Studies and Research, Institute of Hospitality and Tourism (IHT) UWI and the Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) recently conducted two workshops on Community Tourism and National Parks Management at the Mona Campus, recently. The workshops were conducted by Carolyn Hale, Senior Project Officer at UWI and Professors Angelina Kendra, David Truly and Ben Tyson of the CCSU.
Annual Commemoration Celebrations and Alumni Week
Members of the UWI community are gearing up for the Annual Commemoration celebrations and Alumni Week to take place at the Mona Campus over the period February 17 – 27. The 2005 celebrations are being held in honour of Director General of the International Centre for Environmental and Nuclear Sciences and former Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor the Hon. Gerald Lalor. The week begins with a Flag Raising Ceremony and University Parade on Friday, February 18, aimed at highlighting the regional nature of the institution.
Colombian Film
The Latin American-Caribbean Centre of the University of the West Indies in collaboration with The Embassy of Colombia Presents the Colombian Film: MARIA FULL OF GRACE, starring: Catalina Sandino Moreno, Yenny Paola Vega, Guilied López and others. Director: Joshua Marston. This film will be shown on Wednesday, February 16 at 8:00 p.m. at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N10 Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI. Admission if free and is for persons 17 years and older.
Commuting Student Day and Exposition 2005
The Commuting Students’ Committee in association with the Guild of Students will host Commuting Students’ Day and Exposition 2005 on February 10 at the Students Union, UWI from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Activities include: a concert, karaoke and a fashion show. The activities will take place between 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. and “Cariculture” from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. All commuting students are invited to attend.
Distinguished Fellow
The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce that former leader of the opposition in Jamaica the Most Honourable Edward Seaga, has taken up the post of Distinguished Fellow in the School for Graduate Studies and Research at its Mona Campus. Mr. Seaga’s appointment is at professorial level, as are several such appointments, for example, the University Librarian and the University Counsel (Legal Unit Director). However, a person so appointed is not to be styled ‘professor’.
Finance and General Purposes Committee (F&GPC)
Finance and General Purposes Committee (F&GPC) Mona has agreed to recommend that the University Council consider permitting full time as well as part time students in the Faculties of Humanities and Education, Pure and Applied Sciences and Social Sciences to pay per credit for all courses taken as part of the degree programme. F&GPC, Mona is also recommending that Council review the policy governing the relationship between full or part-time registration and the calculation of fees.
