Research Day
Plans are now advanced for Research Day 2005 at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. Research Day 2005 will take place on January 27 and 28 with the theme Natural Hazards, Disasters and Sustainable Development. The opening ceremony takes place on Thursday, January 27 at the Undercroft of the Senate Building. The Governor General, Sir Howard Cooke will officially declare the opening of Research Day and the Guest Speaker will be Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. the Hon. Omar Davies.
Semester Two begins
Classes have resumed for the second semester for the 2004-2005 academic year at The University of the West Indies. The University wishes to advise that all tuition fees for the second semester become due and payable at the start of the semester. Registration without penalty is allowed up to January 21. Late registration after January 21 is allowed up to January 28, but students are subject to a late registration fee of J$1000 as well as a fine of one (1) per cent on the amount of fees outstanding.
The University Theological College of the West Indies Celebrates Fortieth Anniversary
The University Theological College of the West Indies (UTCWI) will celebrates its Fortieth Anniversary this year with a series of events to take place over the period January to November this year. The celebrations will begin with a Church Service to be held on Wednesday, January 19 at the University Chapel, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Guest Speaker at the function will be the Executive Secretary for Church Development in the Programme Unit on Evangelization and Church Growth of the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, Rev. Wellness Promotion Drive
In keeping with the Wellness Promotion Drive on the Mona Campus, the University Health Centre will be hosting a Breast Cancer Screening session on Thursday, January 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. The Mobile Mammography Unit of the Jamaica Cancer Society will be at the Health Centre performing mammograms and there will also be educational videos on show and handouts available. Persons will also have an opportunity to discuss concerns about breast cancer with medical staff. Persons wishing to make appointments should contact the Billing Office at the Health Centre by Friday, January 21.

Eleventh International Diabetes Conference
The University of the West Indies Diabetes Outreach Project (UDOP) in association with the Pan American Health Organisation and the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute will host the Eleventh International Diabetes Conference from March 3 – 6, 2005 at the Jamaica Conference Centre, Kingston. The theme of the conference is Diabetes and Aging. Four Month Course in the Principles and Practice of Social Work
The Social Welfare Training Centre of the School of Continuing Studies, UWI is again offering the Four Month Course in the Principles and Practice of Social Work. The course will be held over the period January 12 to April 28 2005 and is designed to meet the needs of persons working in the broad area of social welfare either as professionals or voluntary workers in recognised agencies, who have not had professional training in social work. Applicants should have had three or more years experience, but special consideration will be given to others not meeting these criteria.
Graduate-level Course on Copyright Principles and Practices
The Department of Library and Information Studies will offer a Graduate-level Course on Copyright Principles and Practices specifically designed for Librarians and other information specialists. The course is being offered in recognition of the need to establish and maintain a balance between access to information and the protection of the rights of authors and publishers and in response to the increasing need for capacity building in this area.
IDB Scholarships
Applications are open for the following IDB scholarships: Southern Hemisphere Programme for studies at Japanese Universities and (Special Programme) for studies at Japanese Universities: Academic year 2005/06.
