Sir Alister McIntyre Distinguished Lecture

The Sir Alister McIntyre Distinguished Lecture is an integral part of the Annual Diabetes Conference. This year, it will be delivered during the first scientific session on Thursday, March 3. The topic of the lecture will be ‘Aging, the greatest public health challenge for the 21st century. The speaker will be by Dr. Alexander Kalache, of the World Health Organisation in Geneva.

Tenth Great Book Sale

The University of the West Indies Press will host its Tenth Great Book Sale from Monday, January 31, to Thursday, February 3, 2005 at the Assembly Hall on the Mona Campus from 9.00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The Press will have on sale over 220 titles in eleven subject areas, which will appeal to students at the tertiary level, and particularly those who are taking CXC and CAPE examinations in Caribbean History. The general reader will also find many titles of interest.

UWI Migration Seminar Series to Feature Belize

The Caribbean Migration Experience in Belize and the Bay Islands of Honduras will be featured this year in the Seventh Seminar in the Annual Intra- Regional Migration Series which examines issues arising from the massive migration from the English-speaking Caribbean to Latin America over the past hundred years.
The seminar planned for July 7-9 on the Mona Campus is coordinated by the UWI Latin American - Caribbean Centre (LACC). All persons who have an interest in this subject are invited to contact the LACC (876) 702-4721 or email annette.insanally@uwimona.edu.jm

UWI/WTO Trade Policy Course

The University of the West Indies, in partnership with the World Trade Organization, will conduct the second UWI/WTO Trade Policy Course at the Mona Campus during the period January 24 to April 15, 2005.
The course is geared towards the training of government trade officials from the Caribbean in all areas of trade policies and negotiations. The ultimate aim is to build capacity in order to strengthen the region's
ability to more effectively engage in trade negotiations in the global market. Twenty five (25) participants will be in attendance representing fifteen (15) countries.

11th Annual International Conference on Diabetes

The UWI’s Diabetes Outreach Project, UDOP, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)/World Health Organization (WHO) and the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI) will host its 11th International Conference on Diabetes from March 3 to 6 at the Jamaica Conference Centre, Kingston, Jamaica. Beginners Course in Amharic

The Institute of Caribbean Studies is now offering a course in beginners Amharic. Teaching for the non-credit course will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. and will run for the period January 17 to April 13. Registration takes place at the Offices of the Institute of Caribbean Studies on Mondays and Wednesday from 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. Further enquiries may be made at the Institute, Room 3 in the Faculty of Humanities and Education telephone numbers 512-3228 or 424-9712.

Book Launch

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Grace Allen Young will be the Guest Speaker at the Launch of a Book by Ina Barrett entitled Organisational Challenges/A Caribbean Perspective: Management Cases with Issues Peculiar to Developing Countries. The launch takes place on Thursday, January 20 at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Fourteenth Annual Career Expo

The Fourteenth Annual Career Expo organised by the Office of Placement and Career Services will be held March 3 - 4 in the Assembly Hall on the Mona Campus. The theme of the expo is ‘The Caribbean Single Market Economy – Am I Job Ready?’
Student Services Manager for Placement and Career Services, Merrit Henry, says that the career expo has become one of the biggest outreach programmes of the University. It provides valuable career information to students of the University of the West Indies as well as some fifty educational institutions island wide.

Graduate Recruitment Programme

The Office of Placement and Career Services has arranged a Graduate Recruitment Programme during which final year students will be interviewed by employers who require candidates to fill permanent vacancies in their organisations. This programme will be held from March 29 – April 29, 2005. Members of the graduating class who would like to participate in this recruitment programme, should collect a package from the Office of Placement and Career Services, the Commuting Students Lounge or their Hall of Residence. Each student will be allowed a maximum of six (6) interviews.

Joan Dobson

The Office of Student Services is saddened by the passing of Human Resources Manager at Fiscal Services Ltd., Joan Dobson, who served as a Mentor in the UWI’s Mentorship Programme from 2001 to the time of her death, and expresses sincere condolences to family members.
