New Honorary Distinguished Fellows Appointed
The Finance and General Purposes Committee of the University of the West Indies at a recent meeting approved the appointment of two Honorary Professors, on attachment to the School of Graduate Studies and Research at Mona.
Valedictory Service
The University of the West Indies, Mona hosts its Valedictory Service on Sunday, April 19, 2009 at 9 am at the UWI Chapel featuring the UWI Singers.
Final year students, family and friends and graduates are invited to attend.
“Ras Cuba”

The UWI Cultural Programme Committee in association with the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work at UWI, Mona has organized a documentary showing series, the first of which takes place on Friday, April 17, 2009 at 6 pm at the Neville Hall lecture Theatre (N1). The documentary is entitled, “Ras Cuba” and is directed by Suzanne Moss.
UWI Awards Scholarship to Winning 2009 Schools’ Challenge Quiz Team
Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the UWI, Mona Campus, Professor Gordon Shirley recently presented members of the winning team in the 2009 TVJ Schools’ Challenge Quiz, Kingston College (KC) with the UWI, Mona/ TVJ Schools’ Challenge Scholarship.
HIV/AIDS Activist Delivers Public Lecture at UWI, Mona
Dr. Winstone Zulu, visiting fellow at Ryerson University in Canada will visit Jamaica between April 16-17, 2009 at the invitation of the Office of the Principal, UWI, Mona. While in Jamaica Dr. Zulu will deliver a public lecture on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 6 pm at Chemistry Lecture Theatre (Chem 5).
"Travel RED"
CARIMAC final year student, Kimba-Lee Kirton in association with the Commuting Students Office, UWI, Mona has organized a campaign dubbed “Travel Red” which is designed to promote awareness of the re-introduced taxi policy and to provide a forum to discuss implications and concerns related to the Taxi Policy. As part of this campaign an awareness forum is being staged on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 2 pm at the Commuting Students Lounge, UWI, Mona.
UWI Hosts CAPE History Lecture Series
The Department of History and Archeology at UWI, Mona hosts Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) Lecture Series for History Unit One and Unit Two on April 25, 2009 and May 2, 2009 respectively. The lectures will run from 10 a.m. to 2: 30 p.m. daily.
UWI Lecturer for Singapore Workshops
Brian Heap, Senior Lecturer and Staff Tutor at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI, Mona, has been invited by the Ministry of Education in Singapore to serve as an adjudicator for the Singapore 2009 Youth Arts Festival from March 30-April 16, 2009. The Festival will see an estimated one hundred and twenty (120) drama entries from secondary schools. While there, he will also be conducting a series of Drama workshops for teachers from these 120 secondary schools.
Noche Latina
The Department of Modern Languages, UWI, Mona and the UWI Spanish Club will host Noche Latina on Thursday, April 9, 2009 at 7 pm at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Performing Arts (PSCCCA).
Noche Latina is designed to showcase and expose the university community and the public to the Spanish culture.
UWI Press Shines at BIAJ Award Ceremony
At the 10th Biennial Book Industry of Jamaica National Book Award Ceremony held recently, the University of the West Indies Press, its authors and staff received a record number of awards. Jamaican Food by Barry Higman and Archibald Monteath by Maureen Warner-Lewis shared the Best Academic Book Award with Belisario by Jackie Ranston (The Mill Press). Jamaican Food also received the Best Reference Book Award while Archibald Monteath and Belisario (Mill Press) shared the Best Adult Non-Fiction Award.
