ICT Research Conference for the Caribbean Staged at UWI, Mona

"Development of Information Communication Technology in the Caribbean Region-Research, Applications and Policies" is the theme of the inaugural ICT Research Conference being staged by the Caribbean Academy of Sciences (CAS). The Conference takes place on March 16-17, 2009 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona.

Sir Frank Worrell Commemorative Blood Drive

The University of the West Indies, Mona will host the annual Sir Frank Worrell Memorial Blood Drive from March 17 – 18, 2009 at the Assembly Hall, UWI Mona. The Blood drive which began in March 2004 was renamed in March 2007 in honour of Sir Frank Worrell. He was the first donor of blood to Nari Contractor, former captain of the Indian Cricket team, who was injured during the 1962 tour of the West Indies resulting in him needing several blood transfusions and emergency surgeries to save his life.

UWISTAT Footprints Campaign

UWI Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow Ambassadors (UWISTAT) at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona launched its Footprints campaign during the Commemoration Celebrations on Friday, February 13, 2009 at Caribbean and International Day.  This year’s Footprints project focuses on improving the campus’ library facilities. The campaign is designed to encourage student participation in campus development. It also seeks to foster “Pelican Pride” and encourage allegiance to the university.    

Commuting Students Fun Day and Sports Extravaganza

The University of the West Indies, Mona has organized Commuting Students Fun day and Sports Extravaganza on Saturday, March 14, 2009 at the UWI, Mona Bowl. The Day is designed to bring the UWI, Mona commuting student population together for a fun filled day while being engaged in competitive sporting activities. The sporting activities include: 6-a-side football competition, 3-a-side basketball competition and 4-a-side netball competition.

8th Psychology Conference

"Psychology of Caribbean People: At Home and Abroad" is the theme of the 8th annual Psychology Conference being held March 11-13, 2009 at the Old Dramatic Theatre, UWI, Mona.

The Conference begins with an Opening Ceremony on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at 5 pm. Professor Elsa Leo-Rhynie, former principal of UWI, Mona will be the guest speaker. She will address the historical development of the psychology programme at the UWI, Mona.

“Accommodating Persons with Disabilities in Higher Education”

The Offices of the Deputy Principal and Special Student Services have organized a Campus Sensitization Symposium titled, “Accommodating Persons with Disabilities in Higher Education.” The Forum takes place on Thursday, March 12, 2009 at 2 pm at the Mona Lions Centre for Students with Special Needs.

Mary Seacole Hall Week

Mary Seacole Hall Week takes place from March 8-15, 2009 under the theme, “Empower A Woman: Feed A Village”. The Week features a lecture on March 11 at 7 pm on the Lawns of the Mary Seacole Hall to be delivered by Mrs. Yvonne MaCalla –Sobers, Convener of Families Against State Terrorism (FAST) accompanied by a performance by Tanya Stephens. Other activities during the week include: Sports Day on March 12 at the Mona Bowl, a Health Fair on March 12 starting at 8 am at the Lawn of Mary Seacole Hall and a Pageant on March 14 at 7 pm at the Assembly Hall.

2009 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize

The Announcement of the Winners of the 2009 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Canada and the Caribbean region takes place on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at 6 pm at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts.

The event will see the dramatic staging of “Hurricane Stories” from “Gardening in the Tropics” by Olive Senior, 1987 Commonwealth Writer’s Prize Winner, and Readings from the best book and best first book.

“The Global Fight against Smoking Terrors”

The Standing Committee on Public Health (SCOPH) at UWI, Mona under the auspice of the Jamaica Medical Students Association (JAMSA) has organized an anti smoking campaign dubbed, “Fumes of Mass Destruction: The Global Fight against Smoking Terrors” at UWI, Mona from March 9-13, 2009. The Campaign aims to increase awareness of the implications of smoking of tobacco and marijuana and promote a stance against smoking among the UWI community.

United Theological College Founders’ Week

The United Theological College of the West Indies (UTCWI) hosts Founders’ Week 2009 from March 9- 12 under the theme, “Remembering John Calvin – Bury him or Praise Him.” The Week is being marked with a Women’s Forum on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at 2 pm at the UTCWI Undercroft and keynote lectures by Dr. Setri Nyomi, General Secretary of World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC).
