UWI Open Campus

The former UWIDEC building located on the Ring Road, Mona had been renamed the Open Campus Learning Resource Centre (OCLC).
It is also timely to remind all Mona staff members that the UWI Distance education Centre (UWIDEC), the School of Continuing Studies (SCS) and the tertiary Level Institutions Unit (TLIU) – have all merged to become the UWI Open Campus. Kindly adjust your internal communications, publications, records and announcements to reflect these changes.
UWI Mona Campus, Culture and Heritage Tour
The campus community is being advised that when entertaining visitors from abroad or planning conference schedules, to think of including 'The UWI Mona Campus, Culture and Heritage Tour.' The tour is an excellent opportunity for visitors to get a real feel of the Mona campus, and see a side of Jamaican history and culture not offered elsewhere. It features the campus' two national heritage sites, as well as several other spots of cultural and historic importance.
“Tertiary Education at the Crossroads”

The School of Education at the University of the West Indies, Mona will host an Education Forum under the theme, “Tertiary Education at the Crossroads”. The Forum is scheduled for Thursday, May 7, 2009 from 9 am to 4 pm at the Gold Room, Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona.
The keynote address will be delivered by The Most Honourable Professor, Sir Kenneth Hall, OJ. on the topic, “the Role of tertiary Education in National Development”.
“2009/10 Fiscal Budget”

The Department of Economics at the University of West Indies, Mona will host a panel discussion on the recently tabled 2009-2010 Fiscal Budget on Thursday, May 7, 2009 at 5:30 pm at the Chemistry Lecture (Chem 5), UWI, Mona. The following broad areas will be discussed: Estimates of Expenditures; Revenue Measures and Tax Administration Reform; The size of government debt and its implications; and Implications of the Budget for the Macro-economy.
UWI Games 2009 Goes to St. Augustine
It’s UWI Games time again! In just a few weeks, the St Augustine Campus will host the 2009 UWI Games. The University’s biennial student games, which are rotated among the three main UWI campuses, will head to the St. Augustine Campus in Trinidad from May 21-28, 2009.
The Games will be formally opened on Tuesday, May 21, 2009 by Deputy Principal, UWI, St. Augustine, Professor Rhoda Reddock in an official ceremony at the UWI St Augustine Sport and Physical Education Centre (SPEC).

CARIGEN Launches New Suite of Services
CARIGEN, the innovative DNA-testing facility at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus is expanding the suite of services which it will be able to offer in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. Effective May 2009, the company will be offering two new tests: DNA-based pre-natal screening, to test for genetic disorders in the unborn child, and DNA-based testing for three of the most common sexually transmitted diseases, the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV),Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea .
UWI Hosts CAPE History Lecture Series

The Department of History and Archeology at UWI, Mona hosts Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) Lecture Series for History Unit One and Unit Two starting at 10 am daily on April 25, 2009 and May 2, 2009 respectively.
Abortion Public Forum
The Institute of Gender and Development Studies (IGDS) and the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) will host a public discussion entitled "Establishing Common Ground: A Conversation on Reforming the Law on Abortion in Jamaica". The Forum takes place on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 3 pm at the Undercroft, UWI Mona.
UWI STAT Induction and CSME Awards Ceremony 2009
UWI Students Today Ambassadors Tomorrow (UWISTAT) officially welcomed nineteen new members during its recent induction ceremony and hosted the second Caribbean Single Market Economy (CSME) Awards presentation. The inductees who hail from within and beyond the Caribbean are students currently enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at The University of the West Indies.
