Seventeen Actor Boy Award Nominations for University Players
The University Players, the resident theatre company at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts at UWI, Mona recently received an unprecedented seventeen Actor Boy Award nominations for achievement in Jamaican Theatre during 2008. The Players’ two major productions, Aimé Césaire’s A Tempest and Yasmina Reza’s ART both received nominations, the former eleven and the latter six.
Dr. Halvard White-Piano Recital

There will be a piano recital by Dr. Halvard White on Monday, April 6, 2009 at 7:45 pm at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts.
Performances include Fantasie by Chopin, Tarantella by Pieczonka, three pieces by Debussy and two pieces by Ravel. In addition White will perform two pieces by Ginastera, three preludes by Rachimaninov and the suite by Bartok.
Tickets cost J$700 and may be purchased at the PSCCA on the day of the Recital as of 6:30 pm.
UWI Chess Tournament

The UWI Chess Society will host Magnificent Chess UWI Masters and Open Tournaments on March 16-22, 2009 with Grand Masters and Masters from across the world. The Masters and Open Tournaments take place on March 19-22, 2009 at the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona.
The Registration fee for the Masters Tournament is USD $100, Open Section is J$ 2000, Other Sections, Women, Students and Children is J$1000 and UWI/ Utech students is J $650. To register please visit the website at www.magnificentchess.com or www.uwichess.com.
ICT Awareness Workshop
The Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication, UWI, Mona and Caribbean Academy of Science will host an Information Communication Technology Awareness Workshop on March 18-19, 2009 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre.
UWI Commemoration Dinner 2009
The Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Honourable Bruce Golding will be the guest speaker at the Grand Commemoration Dinner on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at 7 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. The Dinner culminates the Commemoration Celebrations at The University of the West Indies, Mona. The Dinner is in honour of Professor Anthony Chen, former Head of the Climate Studies Group, one of the leading centres for climate change research in the Caribbean, and Professor of Applied Atmospheric Physics in the Department of Physics.
25th Annual Elsa Goveia Lecture

The Department of History and Archaeology hosts the 25th annual Elsa Goveia Lecture on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at 5:30 pm at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts. The Lecture is being delivered by Professor Brian Moore, Professor of History and Africana and Latin American Studies, University of Colgate, USA. The lecture is entitled “The Struggle for the Cultural Soul of Jamaica after Morant Bay”.
Anthropology Day
The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work, UWI, Mona stages the second Anthropology Day under the theme Anthropology Day: Fi Wi Anthropology. The Day’s activities take place on Friday March 20, 2009 at 10 am at the Undercroft.
Kenneth E. Ingram Memorial Lecture
The first Kenneth E. Ingram Memorial Lecture will be held at Chemistry Lecture Theatre (C5) at UWI, Mona on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at 6 pm. The lecture is titled, Libraries in a Globalized Environment. It will be delivered by Professor Jose Marie Griffiths, Dean of the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Professor Griffiths is an active academic, researcher, and has been involved in various policy making initiatives in the United States.
Pure and Applied Annual Awards Ceremony

The Annual Awards Ceremony for Undergraduate Students of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2009 starting at 3:00 pm in the Chemistry Lecture Theatre Five (C5). This year’s ceremony will see the recognition of lecturers who have received outstanding scores on their course assessment for the last academic year.
The keynote speaker will be the Honourable Karl Samuda, Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce.
