CARIMAC Students Stage Mock Press Conference

Final year Public Relations and Print and Online Journalism students at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) at UWI, Mona will stage a mock press conference at the Mary Seacole Hall meeting room on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at 2 pm. The mock press conference is designed to equip students with practical skills in dealing with the press in crisis situations and provide hands-on experience in planning press conferences. It will also facilitate critically thinking in students and allow them to respond strategically in crisis situations.

Lincoln Scholar to Deliver Public Lecture at UWI, Mona

On the heels of the just commemorated Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial, the Lincoln scholar and author Professor Michael Burlingame will deliver a public lecture titled, “The Life of Abraham Lincoln and the Lincoln-Obama Connection” on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at 1 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre ((N1), UWI, Mona. Dr. Matthew Smith, Lecturer, Department of History and Archaeology will also speak on this occasion.

UWI Launches Greenitiative

The University of the West Indies, Mona has launched the Greenitiative as evidence of its commitment to facilitate sustainable growth as a higher education institution. The Impact of the Financial Crisis on Job Security in Higher Education

Senator, the Honourable Dwight Nelson, Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Finance will be the guest speaker at the 2009 Forum being organized by the Association of Caribbean Higher Education Administrators (ACHEA) in collaboration with the West Indian Group of University Teachers (WIGUT) Jamaica. The Forum is entitled “The Impact of the Financial Crisis on Job Security in Higher Education”. It takes place on Friday, April 3, 2009 at 9 am at the Multifunctional Room, Main Library, UWI, Mona.

Art-Exhibition: "Transformations"

Professor Ian Boxill, Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work presents an Art exhibition entitled, "Transformations" on April 2-9, 2009. The Exhibition is being housed in the UWI, Bookshop. The official opening of the Exhibition takes place on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at 1 pm.

The university community is invited to view the exhibition.

Distinguished Lecture

The Department of Medicine at The University of the West Indies, Mona hosts a distinguished lecture entitled, "Medicine and the Humanities in Medical School Curricula" on Friday, April 3, 2009 at the Main Medical Theatre located at the University Hospital of the West Indies. Professor Emeritus Courtenay Bartholomew, Director of the Medical Research Foundation and Professor Emeritus of the University of the West Indies at St. Augustine will deliver the lecture.

UWI Admitted to International Epidemiology Network

The Epidemiology Research Unit (ERU) in the Tropical Medicine Research Institute (TMRI), UWI and colleagues from the Faculties of Medical Sciences and Social Sciences and the Centre for Gender and Development Studies of the UWI, have been admitted to the International Clinical Epidemiology Network (INCLEN) as a Clinical Epidemiology Unit (CEU) of the Canada/ USA International Clinical Epidemiology Network (CanUSACLEN) branch of INCLEN.  

Pure and Applied Annual Awards Ceremony

Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Dr. the Honourable Ronald Robinson will deliver the keynote address at the annual Faculty of Pure and Applied Science Awards Ceremony on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at 3 pm at the Chemistry Lecture Five (Chem 5) at the UWI, Mona. The Ceremony will recognize the academic achievement of outstanding undergraduate students in the Faculty.

25th Annual Elsa Goveia Lecture

“The Struggle for the Cultural Soul of Jamaica after Morant Bay” is the title of the 25th annual Elsa Goveia lecture organized by the Department of History and Archaeology, UWI, Mona. The lecture takes place on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at 5:30 pm at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA). Professor Brian Moore, Professor of History and Africana and Latin American Studies, University of Colgate, USA will deliver the lecture.

Kenneth E. Ingram Memorial Lecture

“Libraries in a Globalized Environment” is the title of the first Kenneth E. Ingram Memorial Lecture which takes place on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at 6 pm at Chemistry Lecture Theatre (C5) at UWI, Mona. The lecture will be delivered by Professor Jose Marie Griffiths, Dean of the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Professor Griffiths is an active academic, researcher, and has been involved in various policy making initiatives in the United States.
