The University of the West Indies, Mona hosts a seminar titled, “Caribbean Agriculture and Food in a Changing Global Context” on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at the Council Room, UWI, Mona.
FINPYME: Diagnostic Tool for Small and Medium Size Enterprises Launched in Jamaica
The Mona School of Business, UWI, Mona and the Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC), a member of the Inter American Development Bank (IDB) launched the FINPYME Programme on Monday, March 2, 2009.
The launch was designed to introduce the FINPYME Diagnostic Tool, an innovative method which evaluates small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) with a view to determine the factors which positively or negatively impact the SMEs and assist them to improve their competitiveness and facilitates access to potential sources of funding.
“Man of the Millennium”

“Man of the Millennium”, the last documentary in the Black Film Series during Black History Month, is being shown on Friday, February 27, 2009 at 6 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1). The documentary examines the role of Haile Selassie I in modernizing Ethiopia and as a leading Statesman for the Continent of Africa. The documentary is directed by Tikher Teferra.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
The Series is organized by the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work.
Advancements in Medicine Conference
The third International Advancements in Medicine Conference takes place from February 23-28, 2009 under the theme, “Transforming Research into Policy and Practice”. The Conference is designed to provide a forum through which medical and healthcare professionals in Jamaica and those from other parts of the world can be engaged and share knowledge on current developments in medicine. It will also help identify and implement solutions that will lead to improvements in the healthcare delivery systems of Jamaica.
Philip Sherlock Lecture
“Visualizing the Oral Tradition through Film” is the title of this year’s Philip Sherlock Lecture which will be delivered by Natalie Thomson, Executive Director of Cinecom Productions Limited. The Lecture takes place on Thursday, February 26, 2009 at pm at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI, Mona.

Commemoration Celebrations and Alumni Week Continue
The Commemoration Celebrations and Alumni Week continue with a Grand Commemoration Concert and Pelican Award on Sunday, February 22, 2009 at 6 pm at the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona. The Concert will feature Duane Stephenson alongside the wealth of talent from the UWI staff, students and alumni. The MC is Tony Patel.
UWI, Mona Signs Agreement with Chinese Government

The University of the West Indies, Mona has signed an agreement with the Government of the People’s Republic of China for the establishment of a Confucius Institute at the Mona Campus. This will facilitate the strengthening of education cooperation between China and Jamaica, support and promote the development of Chinese language education, and increase mutual understanding among people in China and in Jamaica. On Friday, February 13, the Vice President of China, H.E. Xi Jinping, visited the Mona Campus and handed over a plaque commemorating the occasion.
UWI Launches Clinical Epidemiology Unit
The Epidemiology Research Unit (ERU) in the Tropical Medicine Research Institute, UWI will launch the Clinical Epidemiology Unit on Thursday, February 19, 2009 at 9 am at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. The Launch signifies the admittance of UWI to the International Clinical Epidemiology Network (INCLEN) as a Clinical Epidemiology Unit (CEU) of the Canada/ USA International Clinical Epidemiology Network (CanUSACLEN), branch of INCLEN.
Philip Sherlock International Arts Festival Blasts Off on February 16

The Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA) stages the inaugural International Arts Festival from February 16 to March 8, 2009. The three-week long festival is being staged as the culmination of the Centre’s fortieth anniversary celebrations, and has been programmed around the time of Sir Philip Sherlock’s birthday, February 25. The occasion will showcase the work of some of the most exciting young artists from the Caribbean region and its Diaspora.
UWI Track and Field Invitational
As part of the UWI Commemoration Celebrations the Sports Department at UWI, Mona has organized the UWI Track and Field Invitational on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at 9 am at the National Stadium. World Junior Champions, Olympians, World Championship medalists along with participants from the Cayman Islands and Curacao will take part in the Track and Field Meet. The event is used as preparation for the upcoming track and field season.
