Upgrade Seminar
The Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy hosts a MPhil/ PhD upgrade seminar for Kamau Chionesu on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 1:00 pm at UWIDEC. The lecture is titled “Science, Economics and Development: A Critical Analysis of Economics as a Tool for Understanding and Facilitating Development”.
The seminar explores whether or not the methods and concepts of the dominant disciplinary paradigm of economics - neoclassical economics - with its emphasis on mathematical formalism, can provide an adequate, scientific account of development.
Health Centre Bazaar
The University Health Centre presents its annual Bazaar on Friday, December 19, 2008 between 12 noon and 5 pm at the Health Centre car park. A wide range of items will be on sale including ceramic pieces, clothing, jewelry and paintings by Peter Peart.
Congratulations
At the recently held Long Service and Special 60th Anniversary Ceremony five members of the university community were awarded Meritorious Awards for their outstanding contribution to the institution. The recipients were: Mary Gray, Department of Literatures in English, Zellyne Jennings-Craig, Educational Studies, Paulette Williams, Library, Sandra Pusey, Secretariat, Office of the Campus Registrar and Leonna Bobb-Semple, Library.
“Carols to Remember”
The University Singers along with guest artistes: Dr. Kathy Brown, Omari and Radick presents “Carols to Remember” on Sunday, December 21, 2008 at Fellowship Tabernacle under the distinguished patronage of Mrs. Lorna Golding, wife of the Prime Minster of Jamaica. This is a benefit concert for Leonardo McFarlane, member of UWI Singers and former member of UWI Panoridim.
Admission is J $1000, J $500 for students with ID and children under 12 years J $300.
Hon. Pearnel Charles Launches Book titled "Jamaica and the People's Struggle for Survival"
Prime Minster of Jamaica, the Honourable Bruce Golding will be guest speaker at the launch of the book “Jamaica and the People's Struggle for Survival" authored by Honourable Pearnel Charles, Minister of Labour and Social Security. The book launch is being hosted by the Department of Government at the University of the West Indies, Mona and takes place on Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 6 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona.

Bookshop Customer Appreciation Day
The UWI, Mona Bookshop will have its Customer Appreciation Day on Friday, December 12, 2008 during which customers will receive 20% discount on all items on sale. Also taking place on the day is Chocolate Tasting between 12 noon and 3 pm.
Closure of the Mona Campus for the Christmas/New Year holidays
The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus wishes to advise that all administrative offices and teaching departments will be closed from 12.30 pm on Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24, 2008 until Monday, December 29, 2008 when regular business hours i.e. 8:30 am to 4:30 pm will resume. Offices will again be closed on Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at 12:30 pm and then reopen for normal operations on Friday, January 2, 2009.
Local Governance and Intergovernmental Relations Conference
“Local Governance and Intergovernmental Relations: Examining the Past, Assessing the Present and Predicting the Future” is the theme of the conference being hosted by Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) and the Department of Government, UWI, Mona on January 8-9, 2009.
The Conference seeks to provide a forum for discussing theoretic and empirical developments in local governance in the hemisphere; expose management innovations in urban and local development and serve as an arena for policy learning.
Chief Justice of Jamaica Speaks at UWI Long Service Ceremony

The Honourable Mrs. Justice Zaila McCalla, Chief Justice of Jamaica will deliver the main address at the University of the West Indies, Mona Long Service and Special 60th Anniversary Awards Ceremony being held on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at 5 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. The Ceremony will recognize over one hundred employees for their long and dedicated service to the University.
