UWI Researcher Presents at Annual Meeting of Sport Medicine
UWI researcher Dr. Rachel Irving, Research Fellow, Department of Basic Medical Sciences has been invited to make a presentation at the 56th Annual Meeting of the American College of Sport Medicine. Dr. Irving’s presentation will explore the role of genes in elite Jamaican and USA sprinters. The Meeting takes place on May 27-30 and the presentation on May 29, 2009 at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle, Washington. The abstract will be published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Volume 41:5 Supplement.
Black Film Series
The second Black Film Series hosted by UWI, Mona continues with the showing of the film, Power To The People: An Inside Look at the U.S. Black Panther Party Of the 1960s and the 1970s. The documentary contains rare footage that provides an inside perspective of this maligned Social Movement. The film will be shown on Friday, February 20, 2009 at 6 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
The Series is organized by the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work and ends on February 27.
Intimate Relationships Series
The UWI Health Centre through its Counselling Unit presents its annual Intimate Relationships Series for students and staff. This week’s session explores “Handling Conflicts and Break –ups.” The session takes place on February 19, 2009 at 2 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre.
Videotapes of John Grey, author of the best selling Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus series are used as the basis for discussion. Participants will also have opportunity to assess themselves and reflect on their relationships through written exercises.
Advanced Adult and Paediatric Airway Management Workshop
The Section of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care in the Department of Surgery, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at the University of the West Indies, Mona will host a two day Advanced Adult and Paediatric Airway Management Workshop on February 28 and March 1, 2009.
Neglected Tropical Disease: Targets of Opportunity
The Faculties of Pure and Applied Sciences and Medical Sciences in association with Graduate Studies at the University of the West Indies, Mona have organized a Distinguished Lecture to be delivered by Dr. Mark Eberhard, Director of Parasitic Diseases at the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, USA. His lecture is entitled “Neglected Tropical Disease: Targets of Opportunity.” The lecture takes place on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at 5 pm at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre located at the University Hospital of the West Indies.
Modern Languages Day
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures presents Modern Languages Day: Lunch Hour Concert and Food Fair on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts. The Day is designed to provide a cultural display of Spanish, French, Japanese, Chinese and Portuguese cultures through food and a Concert which begins at 2 pm.
Black Film Series
In keeping with February being marked as Reggae month and a period of celebrating “blackness” the University of the West Indies, Mona hosts the second Black Film Series. The Series begins with the a documentary titled, Ethiopia: From the Ancient Kushites to the Black Lion Featuring Ashra Kwesi and Merira Kwesi. The film is a documentary examining how Ancient Ethiopian Culture moved down the Nile River to Nubia and then to Egypt. The documentary will be shown on February 13, 2009 at 6 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre.
8th Annual Perinatal Audit and Symposium
The Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Child Health at UWI, Mona hosts the 8th Annual Perinatal Audit and Symposium under the theme "Medical Disorders during Pregnancy and the Neonatal Period". The Symposium takes place on February 14-15, 2009 at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, located at the University Hospital of the West Indies.
UWI Shuttle Service Extended

The Office of Student Services and Development, UWI Mona wishes to advise that effective February 3, 2009 the Shuttle Service has been extended to: Elleston Flats, Tavern, Gordon Town Road, Mona Heights, Wellington, Karachi, Karachi Pines and Hermitage.
The bus will depart from the Main Library, Monday to Friday on the hour from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Please note that the last bus will depart the Main Library at 1:00 a.m.
Students who wish to use this service must have a valid University of the West Indies Identification Card.
'One Love', Bob Marley and Rastafari…”
'One Love', Bob Marley and Rastafari in the New African Millennium” is the title of the 12th annual Bob Marley Lecture scheduled for Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at 6pm at the Undercroft. The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Jalani Niaah, Lecturer in Rastafari Studies at the UWI, Mona. The Lecture is organized by The Reggae Studies Unit in the Institute of Caribbean Studies, UWI, Mona.
