UWI Long Service Ceremony

Over one hundred employees will be recognized for their long and dedicated service to the University of the West Indies at the annual Long Service Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at 5 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre.

On this occasion employees will be presented with awards for fifteen, twenty-one, thirty and forty years of service to the University.   As part of the 60th anniversary celebration, six special awards for meritorious service will also be presented at the Ceremony.

Carol Service

The University of the West Indies, Mona hosts its annual Carol Service on Sunday, December 7, 2008 at 7pm at the UWI Chapel. The service will be officiated by Rev. Dr. Frank Barker, Moravian Chaplain, UWI, Mona and Rev. Phillip Robinson, Methodist Chaplain, UWI, Mona. will deliver the sermon.

The university community is invited.

UWI Scholarship Examination

The University Scholarship Examination will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2009 and Friday, February 27, 2009 beginning at 9:00 am each day.  Applicants for the Examination must have applied or intend to apply for the University of the West Indies for the 2009/10 academic year or are first year students who entered the University in August 2008. The application fee is J$1,200 (non-refundable). Application closes on December 12, 2008.

Willem Mulder Inaugural Lecture

Dr. Willem Mulder, Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of the West Indies, Mona will deliver his inaugural professorial lecture entitled “Not without Art, but yet to Nature True” – Mathematical Modelling of the Structure-Property Relationships of Condensed Matter.  The lecture will take place on Thursday, December 18, 2008 at 5 pm the New Chemistry Lecture Theatre (Chem 5).

Graduation Photographs

The photographs taken at the 2008 Graduation ceremonies are now available and may be collected at the Public Relations Office during working hours Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until Friday, January 31, 2009.  Thereafter photographs may be collected at Spauldings Photos located at Suite #26, Banana Board Building, 10 South Avenue, Kingston 4.

“Combing through the Roots: the Politics of Hair in Jamaica”

“Combing Through the Roots: The Politics of Hair in Jamaica” is a documentary directed by Kimala Bennett that explores “hair” as a manifestation of anxieties, prejudices, racism and injustice in Jamaica. Various beauty contests are used as a thermometer to gauge what is going on culturally and racially in Jamaica from the late 1940s to the present day. The documentary also looks at the notions of  “good” and “bad” hair that exist in our society and highlights the ways in which these ideas, which date back to the days of slavery, continue to shape our concept of beauty.

Ownali Mohamedali

The UWI, Mona has learnt with sadness of the passing in October 2008 of Mr. Ownali Mohamedali, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Library and Information Studies.  He was a longstanding member of the teaching staff where he served from 1987 to 2008.  He taught the courses on management of libraries to many students over the years and was well loved by staff and students who appreciated his kindness and thoroughness.

Inaugural Professorial Lecture-Professor Lancashire

Professor of Computational Chemistry at the University of the West Indies, Professor Robert Lancashire will deliver his inaugural professorial lecture titled “Visualization of Chemistry and developing the power of the Internet”. The Lecture is scheduled for Thursday, November 27, 2008 at 5:30 pm at Chemistry Lecture Theatre (Chem 5).

Western Jamaica Campus Fair and Official Opening

The UWI, Mona Western Jamaica Campus will host the Western Jamaica Schools Fair on November 27-28 running from 10 am to 7 pm and 9 am to 4 pm respectively. On this occasion guidance counselors, students from high schools in western Jamaica and professionals interested in graduate programmes will have the opportunity to learn about the programme offerings at the newly established campus.
