Revised Fee Payment Deadline
The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, wishes to advise that all fees, that is miscellaneous, tuition, residence and late charges, for the second semester of the 2008/9 academic year, became due and payable at the start of the second semester, which began on January 25, 2009.
Late registration and penalties are applicable between Monday, February 2 and Friday, February 6. Students who have not met their financial obligation to the University will be given Compulsory Leave of Absence as of February 7, 2009.
Safety and Health: Approaches and Models in Emerging Economies
The University of the West Indies, Mona through the Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health Programme in collaboration with The Ministry of Labour and Social Security and the International Labour Organization have organized a presentation titled “Occupational Safety and Health: Approaches and Models in Emerging Economies.” The presentation will be made by Dr. Alan LeServe, International Consultant on Occupational Safety, Health and Environment on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at 4 pm at the Inter Faculty Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona.
CARICOM Exports Symposium
The Department of Economics hosts a Symposium titled, “Diversification of CARICOM Exports: Opportunities and Challenges”. The Symposium takes place on Friday, February 6, 2009 at 9 am at the Blue Room, Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre.
Speakers at the Symposium include: Dr. Marie Freckleton, UWI, Mona, Robert Gregory, Jamaica Trade and Invest, Veona Maloney, Caribbean Export Development Agency, Barbados and Norris Herbert, Ministry of Trade and Industry, Trinidad and Tobago.
“A Permanent Freedom”
The Department of Literatures in English, UWI, Mona hosts the launch of Curdella Forbes’ third collection of stories, “A Permanent Freedom” on Monday, February 9, 2009 at 6 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona. The guest speaker will be Professor Emerita Maureen Warner-Lewis.
Curdella Forbes is the author of two other fictional books, “Songs of Silence” (2002) and “Flying with Icarus” (2003) and the award winning research book, “From Nation to Diaspora: Samuel Selvon, George Lamming and the Cultural Performance of Gender” (2005).
UWI to Host 12th Annual Bob Marley Lecture
'One Love', Bob Marley and Rastafari in the New African Millennium” is the title of the 12th annual Bob Marley Lecture scheduled for Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at the Undercroft. The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Jalani Niaah, Lecturer in Rastafari Studies at the UWI, Mona. The Lecture is organized by The Reggae Studies Unit in the Institute of Caribbean Studies, UWI, Mona.
8th Annual Perinatal Audit and Symposium
The Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Child Health at UWI, Mona hosts the 8th Annual Perinatal Audit and Symposium under the theme "Medical Disorders during Pregnancy and the Neonatal Period". The Symposium takes place on February 14-15, 2009 at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, located at the University Hospital of the West Indies.
UNI-T ‘Do’ Athlon Fun Run Kicks off on February 8

The University of the West Indies, Mona, The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) and Children and Community for Change are partnering to host the UNI-T ‘Do’ Athlon Fun Run on Sunday, February 8, 2009. The event aims to enhance community spirit and encourage and engage the community into healthier lifestyles.
Modern Languages Day
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures presents Modern Languages Day: Lunch Hour Concert and Food Fair on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts. The Day is designed to provide a cultural display of Spanish, French, Japanese, Chinese and Portuguese cultures through food and a Concert which begins at 2 pm.
Public Forum-Novel Approaches to Agriculture and Agribusinesses
The UWI, Mona in collaboration with the Scientific Research Council (SRC) will host a public forum on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at 5-8pm at the Hilton Kingston Hotel. The Forum will address the topic: Novel Approaches to Agriculture and Agribusinesses. Presentations will be made by Dr. Monty Jones, Dr. Adewale Adekunle, Ralph Von Kaufman and Myra Wonperesis, members of a delegation from the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA).
7th Caribbean Neurosciences Symposium and Workshop
The Seventh Caribbean Neurosciences Symposium and Workshop will run from January 22-24 at the Ritz Carlton Golf and Spa, Rose Hall.
This symposium includes a spine workshop at the University Hospital of the West Indies Surgical Skills Laboratory, Continuing Medical Education sessions on paediatric neurosurgery, neurological emergencies, spine, tumours, trauma and critical care. Presenters are from the USA, Canada, Jamaica and the Caribbean.
