Western Jamaica Campus Fair and Official Opening

The UWI, Mona Western Jamaica Campus will be hosting the Western Jamaica Schools Fair on November 27-28 running from 10 am to 7 pm and 9am to 4 pm respectively. On this occasion guidance counsellors and students from high schools in western Jamaica will have the opportunity to learn about the programme offerings at the newly established campus. On Thursday, November 27, there will be a public forum at 5.00 p.m. during which attendees will hear from members of the university community on issues related to admissions, financing a college education and developmental programmes.

Maurice Mason Attends 5th Canadian Risk and Hazards Network (CRHNet) Symposium

Maurice Mason, Project Officer, Institute for Sustainable Development, UWI, Mona attended the 5th Canadian risk and hazards network (CRHNet) symposium held in St. Johns, Newfoundland. The CRHNet was sponsored by the Canadian Risk and Hazards Network.

CRHNet brings together everyone who has an interest in the cross sectoral, multiple dimensions of risk management and disaster reduction. The emphasis is on an interdisciplinary approach that will reach out to everyone with interests in risk mitigation and management.

Scientific Research Study

The University of the West Indies, Biochemistry Unit, Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medical Sciences, invite volunteers to be a part of a scientific research study.

There will be two groups.  Group 1 will include Healthy adults (male and female) between the ages 35 to 55 years, who are Not known to have Diabetes and are non-smokers. Group 2 will include adults between the ages 35 to 55 years, who have Type 2 Diabetes and are Non-smokers

Condolences

The University of the West Indies wishes to express its condolences to the family and friends of Merlene Bolt, who was member of staff for many years and a member of the University Singers. A musical memorial service to celebrate her life will take place on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 10 am at Hope United Church. The University Singers will be participating.

All members of the University community are invited to attend.

"The UWI Glass Ceiling: Splinters, Cracks and Scratches"

"The UWI Glass Ceiling: Splinters, Cracks and Scratches", is the title of the sixth biennial Lucille Mathurin Mair Public Lecture being hosted by the Centre for Gender and Development Studies, Mona Unit, UWI. The Lecture takes place on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at 5:00 pm at the Multifunctional Room, Main Library, UWI, Mona. Professor Elsa Leo-Rhynie, Professor Emerita, former Principal, PVC and the first Regional Coordinator of the CGDS will deliver the Lecture.

The University Players re-stage ‘ART’

‘ART’; the most recent University Players production will be re-staged for four final performances at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI, Mona on Thursday, Friday and Saturday November 13-15 at 8pm and on Sunday November 16 at 6pm. ART features three of Jamaica’s top actors; Munair Zacca, Paul Issa and Alwyn Scott. In addition, Jean Paul Menou, nominated last year in the Actor Boy Awards category for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, has the difficult task of understudying all three roles.

UWI Lights Up in Blue for World Diabetes Day on November 14

The University of the West Indies, Mona in collaboration with the Leo Club of Downtown Kingston in recognizing World Diabetes Day on Friday, November 14, 2008 will light up in blue as a part of the World Diabetes Day Monument Challenge – “Bring Diabetes to Light” Campaign. The lights will be installed at the Annex Building and will be there for viewing from 6:00 pm to midnight.

An information desk will be at the Undercroft with brochures, short video features and other materials from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

Inaugural Professorial Lecture- “Race, the Civilizing Mission and Africaness…”

The Department of History and Archaeology in collaboration with the Faculty of Humanities and Education host an inaugural professorial lecture to be delivered by Dr. Waibinte Wariboko, Professor of African Social History at UWI, Mona. His lecture which takes place on November 14 at 5:00 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1) is titled “Race, the Civilizing Mission and Africaness, 1800 – 1950”.

Kenneth Ingram Lecture Postponed

The Kenneth E Ingram Memorial Lecture which was scheduled for Thursday, November 13 has been postponed because of the illness of the presenter, Mrs. Martha Stone.

Hon. Ralph Gonsalves Delivers Lecture in Caribbean Development Series at UWI, Mona

"Prospects for Economic Union in the Caribbean" is the title of the lecture being delivered by Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr. the Honourable Ralph Gonsalves, on Monday, November 3, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre (SSLT), UWI, Mona. The Lecture is a part of a Public Lecture Series being staged under the aegis of the Department of Economics, UWI, Mona to highlight diverse social and economic Caribbean issues of public interest.
