Mary Seacole Week

Mary Seacole Week is being celebrated from March 11-18 under the theme “Woman Revolutionized.” The week began with a church service followed by several other activities including: a Speech Fest, Lecture and Awards Ceremony. Other activities scheduled for the remaining of the week are: a Health Fair on Friday, March 16 in the Hall’s Parking Lot beginning at 10 am followed by an Alumni banquet at 8:00 p.m. at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge. There will also be a Drama Fest and Insurgency: The Ultimate After Party in the Mary Seacole Dining Room at 7:00 p.m.

Reggae/ Rastafari Discussion Series

The Reggae Studies Unit will host another presentation entitled a Reggae artist’s journey to Christianity featuring “Stitchie” in The Reggae/ Rastafari discussion series. This presentation takes place Friday, March 16 at 5 pm in the New Education Lecture Theatre (NELT). Music will be provided by DJ “Afifa”. The admission is free and members of the University community are invited.

TV Violence and Children’s Behaviour

The Department of Library and Information Studies will host a Talk on Wednesday, March 21, at 4:00 p.m. at the Multifunction Room of the Main Library, UWI Mona entitled “Does TV violence influence behaviour in Children?” The presenter will be Dr. Gloria Royale-Davis.
The University community and the public are invited.

UWI Blood Drive

The University Health Centre will host its annual Blood Donation Drive aimed at promoting voluntary blood donation among the UWI community as a habit for life on Tuesday, March 27 and Wednesday, March 28 in the Assembly Hall. The Blood Drive is a collaborative effort among the University Health Centre, the National Blood Transfusion Bank (Blood Bank) and a group of final year Social Marketing students from Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) under the name IMPACT.

UWI Blood Drive Launch

The University Health Centre will host its annual Blood Donation Drive aimed at promoting voluntary blood donation among the UWI community as a habit for life. The Blood Drive begins with a launch on Thursday, March 15, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at the Multifunctional Room, Main Library, UWI, Mona. The guest speaker is Dr. Dwight Lowe, Consultant Haematologist at the University Hospital of the West Indies and Lecturer in the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI, Mona.

A Historical Study of Women in Jamaica, 1655-1844 Launched

The University of the West Indies Press in association with the Centre for Gender and Development, Mona Unit and the Jamaica Bicentenary Committee will host the launch of the book “A Historical Study of Women in Jamaica, 1655-1844” on Wednesday, March 14 at 6:00 pm at the UWI Press Building. The book is authored by Lucille Mathurin Mair and edited and introduced by Hilary McD. Beckles, Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal, UWI, Cave Hill and Verene Shepherd, Professor of Social History, UWI, Mona.

All Island Cricket Champions to be Decided on Saturday, March 10 at Utech

With the Divisional winners of the Inter-Collegiate Cricket now realized, all eyes are now focused on the institution that will be crowned as the All Island Champions as a mark of college supremacy.

Appointment of Acting Resident Tutor/Head, Belize

The Director of the School of Continuing Studies, Pro Vice Chancellor Lawrence Carrington wishes to announce the appointment of Mrs. Jane Bennett as Acting Resident Tutor/Head of the Belize Centre. Mrs. Bennett began her duties as at February 1. She comes to the Belize Centre with a strong background in Adult Education and Human Resource Development having completed her Master of Science at Fordham University in New York.

Congratulations Dr. Thelora Reynolds

Director of Office of Student Services and Development, Dr. Thelora Reynolds has been elected to the position of Coordinator of International Divisions for the American College Personnel Association (ACPA). Her appointment will officially begin on July 1, under the new governance structure.

Faculty of Pure and Applied Awards Ceremony

The Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences Awards Ceremony takes place on Thursday, March 22 at 3 pm at the New Chemistry Lecture Theatre. The ceremony is being held to recognize students who have performed outstandingly in the 2005/6 academic year and also students from the faculty who are recipients of scholarships and bursaries.
