Annual Commemoration Celebrations and Alumni Week 2007
The Annual Commemoration Celebrations and Alumni Week take place at the University of the West Indies, Mona over the period February15-23, 2007.
The Commemoration Celebrations which began in 2001 provide an opportunity to celebrate the founding of the University and recognize its regional nature, while engendering a greater sense of belonging and develop a feeling of camaraderie among staff, students and graduates. Each year, the celebrations are dedicated to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the institution.
Dynamic Alliance of Assessment and Therapeutic Theatre Lecture
Caribbean Institute of Mental Health and Substance Abuse (CARIMENSA) in association with the Section of Psychiatry, UWI, Mona will host a lecture on The Dynamic Alliance of Assessment and Therapeutic Theatre on Thursday, February 22 at 1:30 pm at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre located at the University Hospital of the West Indies. Professor Stephen Snow will deliver presentation. Professor Snow is the Coordinator of Graduate Drama Therapy Programme and Director of the Creative Arts Therapies Centre for the Arts on Human Development, Concordia University in Canada.
Event Planning and Management Workshop
The Reggae Studies Unit in collaboration with the Institute for Hospitality and Tourism, UWI, Mona will be offering a workshop in Event Planning and Management on Friday, February 23 and Saturday, February 24 at 9: 00 am daily in the Institute for Hospitality & Tourism Conference Room. The workshop is in response to the numerous opportunities presented by the entertainment fraternity for well-planned events.
Faculty of Social Sciences Annual Awards Ceremony
The Faculty of Social Sciences will host its Annual Awards Ceremony to recognize the excellent performance of students during the 2005/2006 academic year. The Ceremony takes place on Thursday, March 8 at 5:30 pm in the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre (SSLT).
The guest speaker will be Harry Smith, Chief Operating Officer of Digicel Jamaica.
Grief Support Sessions
The Counselling Service, the University Health Centre offers its annual Grief Support Group Sessions beginning on Friday, February 23 at 12 noon at the Health Centre Conference Room. These sessions are designed for both students and staff and meet weekly for five sessions. It is aimed at providing a supportive environment for persons who have lost a loved one and would like the opportunity to speak about this loss. The group will look at ways to work through the feelings of grief that come with loss.
IDU Workshop – Issues of Assessment
The Instructional Development Unit will host a series of workshops in March on Assessment for senior administrative and academic staff in the IDU Training Room. The first of these workshops is being held on Wednesday, February 28 and repeated on Thursday, March 1. Each session is held on Wednesdays from 5-7 pm and repeated on Thursdays, 2-4 pm.
Some of the topics being addressed include: What is Assessment - Definition and Purpose, Alternative Assessment and Marking and Feedback.
Professor Rex Nettleford Awarded Docteur Honoris Causa by University of the French Antilles
Professor the Honourable Rex Nettleford, a Vice Chancellor Emeritus of the University of the West Indies recently received a “Docteur Honoris Causa” degree from the Universite des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) at its Guadeloupe campus along with three other Caribbean awardees in an inaugural presentation of such doctorates by the French West Indian University.

Social History Project Exhibition -'History of Cricket in Jamaica, 1870 to the Present'
Befitting with the Caribbean’s preparation for the hosting of the ICC Cricket World Cup in March an exhibition has been mounted on the history of Cricket in Jamaica in the Library's Catalogue hall, UWI, Mona. The Exhibition has been mounted since the beginning of February and may be viewed until the end of the month.
Workshops on Reading and Writing Effectively
In an attempt to address some of the difficulties and challenges that the general student body faces, the Language Unit, UWI, Mona continues to hold Workshops on Reading and Writing at the Writing Centre until March 10.
The topics being covered include: Purpose and Audience, Thesis Statements, Paragraph Structure and Subject Verb Agreement.
