Banking Forum and Book Launch
The Department of Management Studies in collaboration with the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies, will host a banking forum under the theme “Banking on Sustainable Development.” The Forum will be followed by the launch of a book entitled “Examining Bank Failure in Developing Countries: Lessons from Jamaica” by senior lecturer in the Department of Management Studies, Dr. Jenifer Daley. The book focuses on the Jamaican banking crisis of the 1990s.
Bio-Monitoring of Rivers Training Course
The Water Resources Authority in collaboration with UNESCO-International Hydrological Programme presents a training course on Bio-monitoring of Rivers, from February 26 to March 2 at the Department of Life Sciences, University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.
The training course is aimed primarily at promoting the use of bio-indicators as a signal of the status of river water quality.

Career Development for Sustainability in a Global Workplace
“Career Development for Sustainability in a Global Workplace” is the theme for this year’s annual Career Expo which will be held on Friday, March 2 at the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona. This event culminates the month of activities planned by the Office of Placement and Career Services, Office of Student Services and Development to mark Career Awareness month.
Distinguished Lecture Series - 2000 and Beyond
Professor Jane Knight of the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education, Canada will deliver a lecture entitled “Complexities of Internationalization in Higher Education: New Players, New Challenges” on Wednesday, February 28 at 5 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. It is a part of the Distinguished Lecture Series - 2000 and Beyond presented by the Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, in association with the Board for Undergraduate Studies.
Faculty of Social Sciences Annual Awards Ceremony
The Faculty of Social Sciences Annual Awards Ceremony takes place on Thursday, March 8 at 5:30 pm in the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre (SSLT). It seeks to recognize the excellent performance of students during the 2005/2006 academic year. The guest speaker will be Harry Smith, Chief Operating Officer of Digicel Jamaica.
IDU Workshop – Issues of Assessment
The Instructional Development Unit will host a series of workshops in March on Assessment for senior administrative and academic staff in the IDU Training Room. The first of these workshops is being held on Wednesday, February 28 and repeated on Thursday, March 1. Each session is held on Wednesdays from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. and repeated on Thursdays, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Some of the topics being addressed include: What is Assessment - Definition and Purpose, Alternative Assessment and Marking and Feedback.
Japan Day 2007
The Embassy of Japan in association with the Japanese Club at the University of the West Indies, Mona will celebrate Japan Day 2007 on Thursday, March 1. The event will feature an Ikebana lesson from the Ikebana Centre and a Japanese Speech Contest by UWI Japanese Final Year students and a Bon Dance Festival from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. at Undercroft.
UCJ Assessment Team Visit Mona Campus February 26 - March 1
The Council of the University of the West Indies, in 2005, mandated the Mona Campus to seek registration with the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ). This process was initiated in 2006 and a self study of the Campus was prepared in keeping with the guidelines issued by UCJ. The UCJ has now put together an assessing team comprised of Dr. John Randall, former Head Quality Assurance Agency, United Kingdom, Dr. Dennis Mock, President and Vice Chancellor, Nipissing University, Canada, Dr. Wendy Griswold, Professor of Sociology, North Western University, USA, Dr. J.
Condolences –Dorothy Scott
It was with profound sadness that The University of the West Indies community has learnt of the passing of one of its former colleagues, Dorothy Scott and wishes to express sincere condolences to the family, close friends and colleagues of Dorothy Scott. Ms. Scott joined the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy, Mona in 1995 where she was an instructor teaching the Fundamentals of English (UC010), English for Academic Purposes (FD10A) and Writing Foundations for Graduate Students. She also carried out other departmental duties.
