Launch of Bioethics Society
A new regional professional society “The Bioethics Society of the Engish-speaking Caribbean (BSEC)’ will be launched on Friday, May 19 at 4:45 p.m. in the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona.
The Society is primarily for persons who have or intend to have a significant involvement in the discussion, teaching, research, or clinical aspects of bioethics in the English-speaking Caribbean.
Sir Arthur Lewis Institute hosts Public Forum on Memoranda of Understanding
Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies will host a public forum on Thursday, May 18 from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre (SSLT), UWI Mona. The forum is entitled “The Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) and Jamaica’s Development – Rescuing the MOU”, to examine issues of workers’ rights, economic growth, global competitiveness, productivity, social insurance, fiscal challenges and more. Suspension of Opening Hours
Please be advised that the UWI Health Centre will be suspending its extended opening hours effective Saturday, May 13, 2006 (week days - 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. and on Saturdays 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.) This service will resume on Monday, September 4, 2006. During these times, emergencies may be directed to the University Hospital. We apologise for any inconvenience occasioned by these arrangements.
UTCWI Valedictory Service
Nineteen students from Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean will be graduating with the four-year Diploma In Ministerial Studies on May 10, 2006 at the United Theological (UTC) College's Valedictory Service at 5:30 p.m. at the UWI Chapel. The guest preacher is the Rev. Philip Robinson, President of the Jamaica Council of Churches and the liturgist is Rev. Dr. Alastair Campbell. Chairman of the Board, the Rev. Karl Johnson will receive the graduates.
UWI Alumni Association stages Annual General Meeting
The UWI Alumni Association (Jamaica Chapter) invites all UWI graduates and UWIAA members to its Annual General Meeting to be held on Wednesday, May 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the Blue Room, Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. UWI Lecturer receives Global Family Doctor Award
Dr Tomlin Paul, lecturer in the Department of Community Health and Psychiatry has been selected by the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) as the “Global Family Doctor” for May 2006. The "Global Family Doctor of the Month" Award is given to encourage philanthropy among primary care practitioners and to honour doctors giving their time and expertise to their global colleagues and their patients.
WIGUT AGM
Members of WIGUT (Jamaica) are invited to attend the Annual General Meeting on Monday, May 15 at 3:00 p.m. in the Multi-functional Room of the Main Library.

Cassidy-LePage Memorial Lecture
The Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy will be hosting the inaugural Cassidy-LePage Memorial Lecture on Wednesday, May 3 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Undercroft in the Senate Building.
Guest lecturer, Professor John Rickford of Standford University, California, will be speaking on “Vernacular and Creole Languages in Education: Ten Years after the Ebonics Firestorm.” The public is invited to attend. Certificate in Records Management
A special certificate in Records Management Programme: Session 1 will be held at the UWI, Mona Campus, from June 5 to July 14, (six weeks). Offered by the School of Continuing Studies, it is the first of a comprehensive two-year programme consisting of four courses (two each year). The second session will be offered in Summer 2007. Exhibition Honouring His Excellency the Most Honourable Professor Kenneth O. Hall, ON, OJ,Governor General of Jamaica
The exhibition which was mounted by the Library for the ceremony in honour of His Excellency the Most Honourable Professor Kenneth Hall, ON, OJ, Governor General of Jamaica on Thursday, April 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge is now on display in the Catalogue Hall of the Main Library. It highlights his early life at his Alma Mater, Rusea’s High School, his higher educational achievements and his ten years as principal of the UWI, Mona Campus.
