Dipak J. Shah Promoted to Professor
The University of the West Indies (UWI) is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Dipak J. Shah, Senior lecturer in the Department of Pathology to the rank of Professor of (Anatomical) Pathology effective May 20, 2004.
Born in Jambusar, India, Professor Shah graduated from the M.S. University, Vadodara, India in 1969, with the Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery degree. He then received a Diploma in Clinical Pathology in 1972, also from M.S. University and the Doctor of Medicine in Anatomical Pathology from the UWI in 1978.
Grants for Understanding and Promoting Health Literacy
The National Institutes of Health and the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, USA have announced the availability of grants for understanding and promoting health literacy under its RO3 funding mechanism. The projects to be funded must be of two years duration with a budget of up to US$50,000 per year. The goal of the program is to increase scientific understanding of the nature of health literacy and its relationship to healthy behaviors, illness prevention and treatment and chronic disease management.
Lorna Parkins Executive Director of New Caribbean Accreditation Authority
Mrs. Lorna Parkins has been appointed Executive Director of the recently launched Caribbean Accreditation Authority for education in Medicine and other Health Professions with effect from August 1, 2004. Mrs. Parkins who has been employed to The University of the West Indies since 1989, has been Senior Programme Officer in the Office of Planning and Development and the Office of Administration and Special Initiatives, Vice Chancellery since 1999. She was promoted to the rank of Professor with effect from October 2003. Mrs.
Masters Degree in International Economics and International Law
Interested and qualified persons are invited to apply for acceptance to the Masters Degree in International Economics and International Law. This full time programme is being offered by the Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences, UWI Mona. The programme is designed to produce graduates with the knowledge and skills required to work in the challenging arena of international trade negotiations. It is open to candidates with a first degree from a recognised University with at least Upper Second Class honours, preferably in Economics or Law.
The Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine
The Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other health professions was launched by Prime Minister P.J. Patterson on July 14 at Jamaica House in Kingston. The Accreditation Authority has been established based on a proposal initiated by UWI Vice Chancellor, Prof. the Hon. Rex Nettleford for the establishment of an independent authority for education in medicine and other health professions. The proposal was developed in collaboration with CARICOM and Health and Education Ministers from around the region.
Vice Chancellor Designate Advocates Caribbean Regional Research Funding Agency
Vice Chancellor Designate of The University of the West Indies, Professor E. Nigel Harris, has urged CARICOM Heads of Government to consider the establishment of a Caribbean Regional Research Funding Agency. He said that such an agency would be financed by national and regional governments and would provide research funding on a competitive basis, using the peer review mechanism, and focusing on projects likely to contribute to the growth and development of the region.
First Telemedicine/Technology Forum for UWI
Professionals and those who provide services in all areas of the health sector will gather at the Assembly Hall, University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus July 22 -25, 2004 for the first forum on the use of technology in enhancing the flow, access and use of critical patient data to assist various professionals deliver affordable health service in the region.Under the theme “Telemedicine - enhancing access to medical care through technology”, the inaugural telemedicine forum will explore, among other issues, the establishment of a national telemedicine service information technology
Fulbright Scholar at CARIMAC
The Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) at UWI Mona is currently hosting Fulbright Scholar from the University of Rhode Island, Assistant Professor Kendall Moore. Prof. Moore, a Lecturer in Journalism, is teaching a Health Communication course to students in the masters programme at CARIMAC along with Dr. Nancy Muturi, Lecturer and Graduate Studies Coordinator at CARIMAC. Professor Kendall is also working on projects relating to HIV/AIDS and is also producing a documentary.
Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford Receives Commemorative Medal
Vice Chancellor of the UWI, Prof. the Hon. Rex Nettleford was on Monday, July 12, honoured by the Government of Chile at a special ceremony at the Chilean Embassy in Kingston. Professor Nettleford received the Commemorative Medal of the Centenary of the Birth of Pablo Neruda, Chile’s Nobel Laureate in Literature. July 12 marked the exact date of his birth. The award was devised by Chilean President, Ricardo Lagos to be presented to a selected and limited number of outstanding persons who have achieved international recognition in their respective fields. Scotiabank Jamaica Foundation/Sir Alister McIntyre, Lamour Wills Memorial Scholarships
Three students pursuing the Masters in Business Administration at the Mona School of Business, UWI recently received scholarships from the Scotiabank Jamaica Foundation and from the Mona School of Business. Fiona Thompson and Janice Smith are the recipients of the Scotiabank Jamaica Foundation/Sir Alister McIntyre Scholarships, while Alexis Chin received the Lamour Wills Memorial Scholarship. The Scotiabank/Alister McIntyre awards are funded by the Foundation and are named in honour of the former UWI Vice Chancellor.
