Cricket World Cup 2007: Business Opportunities

The Mona School of Business (MSB), UWI has joined with Jamaica’s Investment Promotions Agency, JAMPRO and the Jamaica Conference Board, Jamaica Chamber of Commerce to host a Symposium titled Cricket World Cup 2007: Business Opportunities. The event, to be held under the theme It’s More Than Cricket its Creating Business Opportunities, was unveiled on Thursday, September 2 at a Press Launch held at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre on the Mona Campus. Great Book Sale

The University of the West Indies Press will host its tenth Great Book Sale from Monday, September 27, to Friday, October 1, 2004 from 9:00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. daily. The venue is the Old Dramatic Theatre on the Mona Campus. The Press will have on sale over 220 titles in eleven subject areas, which will appeal to students at the tertiary level, and particularly those who are taking CXC and CAPE examinations in Caribbean History. There will also be titles for the general reader.

Matriculation and Welcome Ceremony

UWI Mona will host its Matriculation and Welcome Ceremony for all new students on Thursday, September 9 at 4:00 p.m. in the Assembly Hall. Students are required to be at the Undercroft by 3:00 p.m. to sign the Matriculation Register. A Matriculation Ceremony is the occasion on which students are formally recognized as members of a University. Their acceptance into the academic community is marked by the signing of the Matriculation Register.

The Institute of Caribbean Studies

The Institute of Caribbean Studies, UWI, Mona, will again offer the introductory non-degree course in Amharic, the main language of Ethiopia from from September 13 to December 2. Classes for new entrants will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. while classes for returning students will be on Mondays and Wednesdays. This is an introductory course which will expose students to the fundamentals of the written and spoken aspects of Amharic, including its alphabet.

Welcome Service

The UWI, Mona Campus will host the Welcome Service for new and returning students and members of staff on Sunday, September 12 at the University Chapel. The service will begin at 9 a.m. Members of the University community and the public are invited.

Annual Sports - One-Day Rally

The second annual Sports One-Day Rally, hosted by the Sports Department, UWI will take place on Saturday, September 4, 2004 at the Mona Bowl from 9 a.m. - 5p.m. All Hall teams are required to participate and Faculties and Workers Teams are invited to participate as well.

Course in Business Communication

The Department of Language, Linguistics & Philosophy is offering a new course in Business Communication for all level 3 students who wish to master the art of communication in the professional business world. This course will enable you to: develop proposals, prepare reports, give effective oral presentations and communicate in a businesslike and professional manner.
Interested students should register early. Limited space available.

Credit Union Funds Park

The Campus community is being advised that work has begun on a proposed landscaped park, which is being funded by the UWI (Mona) and Community Cooperative Credit Union Ltd. The park will be located at the corner of Roseau Road and Gibraltar Camp Way (opposite Irvine Hall) on the vacant lot that once housed the University Nunnery and the first home of the Credit Union. A historical monument the Gibraltar Camp Bell will be erected in the park

Dr. Loretta Sweet Jemmott

Dr. Loretta Sweet Jemmott, FAAN, RN, van Ameringen Professor in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing, Director of the Center for Urban Health Research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, and Co-Chair of the University of Pennsylvania’s Centre for AIDS Research Behaviour and Social Science Research Core, will visit the Department of Advanced Nursing Education (DANE), UWI, August 30-31, 2004.

International Plant Genetic Resources Institutes - Vavilov-Frankel Fellowships 2005 Research Grants

The International Plant Genetics Resource Institute has opened calls for two Vavilov-Frankel Fellowship 2005 Research Grants supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation, Australia and Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. The Fund aims to encourage the conservation and use of plant genetic resources in developing countries by awarding Fellowships to outstanding young researchers to carry out relevant innovative research at an advanced research institute outside their own country for a period of between three months and one year.
