Summer Programmes

The Language Laboratory, Department of Modern Languages and Literature, UWI, Mona is offering beginner’s Japanese and beginner’s and intermediate Spanish this summer.  Japanese will be offered Monday to Friday from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. while beginner’s and intermediate Spanish classes will take place between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m.  Spanish will also be offered Monday to Thursday between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m.  For further information please contact Maria Alao at 927-2743.

The University Singers Concert Season 2003

The University Singers Concert Season 2003 returns on June 5 with a benefit performance for the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts.  Showtime is 8:00 p.m. The Singers will also perform in a benefit concert for the Committee for Students with Disabilities on June 15 also at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts at 4:00 p.m.  Tickets for both concerts are $500.00.  Please call 927-1456 or 927-1047 for further information.

The UWI Alumni Association

The UWI Alumni Association will hold its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, May 21 in the Blue Room, at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge at 6:00 p.m.  Registration begins at 5:30 p.m.  The first 100 registered and seated persons will be eligible to win a special prize.

University Health Centre

May is being celebrated as Child Month and the University Health Centre’s Child Health Clinic will mount an open day and poster display as part of the activities.  This takes place on Wednesday, May 14 from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the Health Centre on the UWI, Mona Campus.   The Clinic is inviting all parents and prospective parents to come and view the displays and watch interesting and informative video tapes on asthma, nutrition for children and newborn care.  Special guests will be the children from the Kids on Campus Preschool.  Refreshments will be provided.

UWI Alumni Association New Executive

The UWI Alumni Association, Jamaica Chapter recently elected a new executive at its Annual General Meeting held on the Mona Campus in May.  The officers for the year 2003 to 2004 effective August 1 are President, Patricia Sutherland; Vice President, Nadine Marriott; Treasurer, Athelstan Bellamy; and Assistant Treasurer, Joan Garfield.  Members chosen to represent Faculty or Department Alumni Associations are Dr.

UWI Sports Summer Camp

The University of the West Indies, Sports Department will host its summer package Champion for Life 2003 for children ages 8-14 years from July 14 to 19 and 21 to 26 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. weekdays at the UWI Mona Bowl.  The cost is $8,000.  The theme for this year is Building Bridges of Hope and Champions for Life.

UWI Student Leadership

The Office of Student Services at UWI, Mona will host its UWI Student Leaders Workshop on Thursday and Friday, May 15 and 16 in the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Social Sciences, starting with registration at 8:00 a.m. each day.  The agenda includes presentations and discussion on a variety of topics such as team building, managing conflict, communication, the role of the student leader, financial accounting, protocol, and proposal writing.  All student leaders are required to attend.

15th Annual Nursing/Midwifery Research Conference and Mary Seivwright Day

The Department of Advanced Nursing Education, UWI, Mona will hold its 15th Annual Nursing/Midwifery Research Conference and Mary Seivwright Day on May 14 and 15.  The theme of the conference is Research: Informing Nursing Practice and the venue is the Hilton Kingston Hotel, Knutsford Boulevard.  Dr. G.

19th Annual Elsa Goveia Memorial Lecture

The 19th Annual Elsa Goveia Memorial Lecture is scheduled for April 9, at 5:00 p.m. at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts on the Mona Campus.  The lecture will be delivered by Professor Howard B. Johnson from the University of Delaware, USA. Professor Johnson is currently Professor of Black American Studies and History at the University of Delaware in Newark, USA.  A Jamaican, he taught at Mona from 1970 - 1980.  His books include The Bahamas from Slavery to Servitude, 1973-1933 and The Bahamas in Slavery and Freedom.
