The Republic of Argentina

The Republic of Argentina is offering Jamaican Nationals the opportunity to read for a Master’s in Radio Chemistry at the National Atomic Energy Commission in Argentina. The two year post-graduate course is designed for professionals in fields related to Chemistry, Physics, Biochemistry and Medicine and will begin in August 2003. The course is the result of an agreement with the National University of Technology. For more information please contact the Commission’s web site at www.cnea.gov.ar.

The Second William Dennis Memorial Lecture

The Second William Dennis Memorial Lecture will take place on Wednesday, June 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Medical Sciences, located at the University Hospital of the West Indies. The lecturer will be Dr. Charles Bagwell, Chief of Paediatric Surgery at the Virginia Commonwealth University, USA. Dr. Bagwell is also External Examiner for the DM Paediatric Surgery Programme at the UWI. His topic will be Trauma in Childhood. The lecture is in honour of Dr.

The UWI Alumni Association, Jamaica Chapter

The UWI Alumni Association, Jamaica Chapter, is advising its members that if they are not hearing from the association this means that the association does not have their contact information. Members are therefore advised to email the association at uwiguild@kasnet.com or telephone 927-1583 to have their records updated. Members are also encouraged to visit the Alumni website at www.uwialumni.org.jm to find out about the alumni’s Great Things for UWI campaign.

Training of Trainers Workshop

The UWI HIV/AIDS Response Programme hosted a ‘Training of Trainers Workshop’ for lecturers on the Mona Campus in May. The workshop was one of the first steps taken to develop a cadre of persons trained in delivering HIV/AIDS information within the UWI. The subject areas addressed at the workshop were Behaviour Change Communication, Teaching Methodologies, Life Skills and Sexuality. A series of similar workshops are planned for the Cave Hill and St. Augustine campuses in addition to the development of a resource manual to aid in curriculum development.

UWI Library Opening Hours During the Summer

In response to requests for longer opening hours during the summer, the Library at UWI Mona is pleased to announce that the Main and Medical Libraries have extending their opening hours. Until July 31 the Main Library will be open Mondays to Thursdays 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. On Fridays opening hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and on Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. The Overnight Reading Room will be open Mondays to Thursdays 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.; Fridays, 6:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.; and Saturdays 12 noon through to 6:00 a.m. on Mondays.

UWI Medical Alumni Bursaries and Prizes for 2003

Miss Tasha-Kay Kamoge Walker second year medical student is the 2003 recipient of the Beryl Kennedy-Clemetson Award. Miss Walker received a cheque for the sum of J$66,580.00. Dr. Glynne Edwards (‘03) is the 2003 recipient of the Sir Harry Annamunthodo Prize in Surgery in the MB BS final examinations and Dr. Bianca Chin (‘03) is the recipient of the Stanley Brooks Memorial Book Prize for the best performance in the combined Pathology/Microbiology final examination for 2002/2003.

Caribbean Health Research Conference

Dr. Kai Morgan, Clinical Psychologist and lecturer in the Section of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI Mona recently attended the Annual Caribbean Health Research Conference in Nassau Bahamas. Dr. Morgan presented a paper titled "Changing Research Culture and Output in the Section of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medical Sciences UWI Mona." Dr. Morgan’s participation in the conference was made possible through the sponsorship of Mr. Roy DeCambre of Churches Chicken.

Champions for Life 2003

The Sports Department at UWI Mona will be holding another Summer Camp this year designed for children between the ages of eight and fourteen. The programme is called "Champions for Life 2003" and will take place from July 14 to 26. The objective of the camp is to use sports as a medium for teaching life skills and directing young minds in a positive direction. The sports offered will include track and field, volleyball, football, table tennis, netball, basketball and cricket.

Community Care for the Elderly

The Department of Community Health and Psychiatry, UWI Mona will host its closing exercise for its course called Community Care of the Elderly in the Caribbean on Wednesday, June 25 at 10:30 a.m. The guest speaker will be Dr. Karen Bell, Director of Family Health Services in the Ministry of Health. The exercise ends a five-month course in which 15 persons from Jamaica and 3 other Caribbean territories were trained to care for the elderly. Participants included nurses, community health aids, as well as persons working in organizations which care for senior citizens.

Kreative Kidz

The Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts will host a summer programme for children 6 to 12 years called Kreative Kids. The programme runs from July 7 to August 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. It will focus on the creative arts with sessions in creative writing, music, dance, drama, and art and craft. These will be delivered by persons who are trained in the specific areas and will include sessions with distinguished persons. The participants will also take part in field trips to the National Gallery, and to craft industry sites to see such items as pottery being made.
