Lunch Hour Concert
The lunch hour concert this week is Ol’ Time Sinting tun Pickney Sinting. Schools from St. Catherine and St. James will present. Traditional Folk Forms from the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission competitions including quadrille, maypole, ring games, kumina etc. The concert will take place at 1:00 p.m. at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts.
Master of Science in Plant Production and Protection
The UWI’s Department of Life Sciences in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences will offer a Master of Science in Plant Production and Protection come the 2003-2004 academic year. The new programme will be offered part-time over two years and will cover topics such as plant production, propagation and harvesting; weeds, soils and climate; pre and post harvest management of pests and diseases; and research methodology. The qualification for entry is a B.Sc. Degree in a Biological or Agricultural Science.
New Security Arrangements for the Senate Building, Mona Campus
New security arrangements were recently put into effect for the Senate Building at UWI, Mona. The official opening hours for the building are 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. All persons visiting the building outside of normal working hours, which are 8:30 a.m.
Office of Administration and Special Initiatives
The Office of Administration and Special Initiatives, UWI through its Special International Group Programmes office, has collaborated on the design of four programmes to be delivered in May 2003 on the Mona Campus. During this month, some 54 students from 4 universities and colleges in the USA along with 8 faculty members will participate in tailor-made courses covering various aspects of socio-cultural, historical, political and economic issues related to the Caribbean in general, and Jamaica in particular. The visitors will be on the campus for varying periods ranging from 6 to 28 days.
Professor Brian Meeks
The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Brian Meeks, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Government, Mona Campus to the post of Professor in the Department with effect from February 5, 2003.
Pure and Applied Sciences Annual Awards Ceremony
The Annual Awards Ceremony for the Undergraduate students of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences will be held on Thursday, March 27, at 3:00 p.m. in the New Chemistry Lecture Theatre. Dr. Nigel Clarke, 1994 Rhodes Scholar, will give the Keynote Address.
Refurbished Multi-Purpose Hard Court at Chancellor Hall
Chancellor Hall will re-open its newly refurbished Multi-purpose Hard Court on Wednesday May 7th at 4:00 p.m. The refurbishing exercise is dubbed Hard Court 2003 - Upgrading a Sporting Facility to meet the Demand of a Growing Campus Population. The project was designed and implemented by final year CARIMAC student, Yushaine Morgan as part of the Communication Analysis and Planning course. The project was sponsored by KFC, Scotia Bank, UWI Mona and Community Co-operative Credit Union and past Chancellorites the Most Honourable P.J.
Researching Maroon Spirit Language
The Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy will host a presentation by Professor Hubert Devonish titled Researching Maroon Spirit Language: A Linguistic Field Trip to Moore Town. The presentation will take place at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 17 in Room 1 in the Faculty of Humanities and Education. Members of the University community are invited to attend.
Social Welfare Training Centre
The Social Welfare Training Centre (SWTC) School of Continuing Studies will celebrate its 40th Anniversary celebrations from Sunday, April 20 to Thursday, April 24. Activities will include a church service on Sunday, April 20 at 9:00 a.m., an opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m., on Tuesday, April 24. The keynote speaker at the opening ceremony will be the Hon. Dennis Lalor, Chief Executive Officer, ICWI and Mr. Morin Seymour, Executive Director of the Kingston Restoration Company. There will also be a seminar presentation on HIV/AIDS, by Professor Brendan Bain beginning at 11:00 a.m.
Social Work Graduation
