Lecture on the Rise and Fall of Empires

Dr. John Rapley, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Government, UWI, Mona will give a lecture to the Jamaican Historical Society on "The Rise and Fall of Empires". The lecture takes place on Tuesday June 17 at 6:00 p.m. at the Liguanea Club.

Prime Minister’s Medal of Appreciation

In closing the celebration to Commemorate Jamaica’s 40th Anniversary of Independence, the Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Most Hon. P. J. Patterson has awarded the Prime Minister’s Medal of Appreciation for service to Jamaicans in a number of categories. Among the awardees are the University Singers who have been awarded a medal for services to the performing arts. Longstanding member of the UWI Alumni Association, resident in Toronto, Canada, Maude Fuller, also received a medal for services to Jamaicans residing abroad.

Professor Anthony Clayton Addresses Commonwealth Forum

Professor Anthony Clayton, UWI Mona’s Alcan Professor of Caribbean Sustainable Development, was invited by the Government of South Africa to give a keynote presentation in an International High Level Forum held in Johannesburg last week. Professor Clayton’s presentation was designed to determine a new role and mandate for the Commonwealth Science Council. The Forum focused on the role of science and technology in development; on the strategies needed to encourage innovation; and on the transfer of skills, technology and capital.

Scholarship to New UWI students

Scholarships are available to new UWI students who have gained acceptance for the academic year 2003/2003 or who are awaiting offers of entry. These scholarships are available in the faculties of Agriculture, Engineering, Medical Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities and Education. Application forms and terms of awards are available from the Office of Outreach and Awards, UWI, Mona, Kingston 7, during the hours 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Mondays to Fridays.

Unit of Disaster Studies Workshop

The Unit for Disaster Studies in the Department of Geography and Geology, UWI Mona will present a workshop called Mitigation of Debris flows Hazards and Risks from July 7 to 10. The workshop is open to interested members of the public, including home owners, engineers involved in the construction of roads, culverts and bridges, earth scientists, mining engineers, disaster planners, insurance managers and information specialists. The workshop is part of the UWI summer course, Analysis and Management of Geohazards and Risks and costs $6,500. This includes refreshments and a field trip.

15th Annual Nursing/Midwifery Research Conference

The Department of Advanced Nursing Education, UWI, Mona will hold its 15th Annual Nursing/Midwifery Research Conference and Mary Seivwright Day on Wednesday and Thursday, May 14 and 15.  The theme of the conference is Research: Informing Nursing Practice and the venue is the Hilton Kingston Hotel, Knutsford Boulevard.  Dr. G.

Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Medical Education

The proposal to establish a regional, independent body for the accreditation of Medical Education and other Health Professional programmes has been endorsed by both the VI Special Meeting of CARICOM Ministers of Education and the VIII Meeting of the Council for Human and Special Development (COHSOD) of the Caribbean Community.  This approval completes important steps in the process towards adoption of the proposal by the CARICOM Heads of Government, which is meeting in Montego Bay, Jamaica in July.

CARIMAC Summer School

Exciting opportunities in communications skills training are being offered in this year’s Summer School at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC), UWI Mona. CARIMAC Summer School, which begins on June 7 and continues to the end of July, offers new courses and a whole spectrum of options in fees and schedules with special discounts for early registration.  Drs.

Chat Bout Series

The School of Graduate Studies and Research at UWI Mona will host the eighth session in the Chat Bout Series on Tuesday, May 13 at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts at 6:00 p.m.  The session will feature a presentation by Marjorie Whylie, Staff Tutor/Senior Lecturer at the Philip Sherlock Centre on the Mona Campus.  Her topic will be Composing Music for Dance.   Ms. Whylie is a well known music educator, composer, arranger, musicologist and bandleader, with expert knowledge of the music of Jamaica and the Caribbean.  The public is invited to attend.

Course for Caregivers of Autistic Children

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Child Health, Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI Mona will host a workshop under the theme, Exploring our Children’s Potential on Friday and Saturday, June 13 and 14.  The workshop is designed for parents, medical professionals and other caregivers of autistic children zero to 5 years.    It is being organized in conjunction with the University Hospital of the West Indies and will take place in the Faculty’s Main Medical Lecture Theatre located at the hospital.  The two day event will focus on empowering participants with the skills and crea
