The Electronic Media & Child Health

Research conducted by Senior Lecturer in the Department of Child Health, Dr. Maureen Samms-Vaughan is being used by the Broadcasting Commission to develop an information campaign on the role of the electronic media in child health and development. The campaign is meant to raise the awareness of parents, guardians, children and the teaching community about the Children’s Code for Programming and about the effects of electronic media on children’s learning and Behaviour. UWI Social Work Students on Regional Internship Programme

Four Social Work students from The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus left the island last week for two-month internships in St Lucia and Dominica. the placements are sponsored by The Caribbean Support Initiative (CSI), an agency of the Bernard Van Leer (early childhood) Foundation and are pilot projects for a regional internship project being developed by the CSI. Two of the students, Sandra Latibeaudiere and Wendy Mclean are completing their Diploma in Social Work, the professional social work qualification available to persons with a first degree in a related discipline.

Dr. Celia Christie

Dr. Celia Christie, Professor and Chair of Paediatrics, Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI, Mona has been elected as Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Professor Christie is being recognized as someone who has achieved professional excellence in infectious diseases and related fields.

Just-In-Time Lecture Technology

The UWI Distance Education Centre in collaboration with the Organization of American States, OAS, will host a workshop from June 24 to 27 at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston, to familiarize UWI personnel from the three campuses and non-campus territories with Just-In-Time Lecture Technology. Just-In-Time Technology enables the production of interactive multimedia sessions on a compact disc, which can be used in conjunction with the Internet, if desired. This means that students would be able to receive lectures and tutorial support at times convenient to them.

Mona’s Athletics and Vollyball Teams Win

UWI Mona’s athletics and vollyball teams were winners at the Caribbean University’s Sports Association’s (CUSA) Tenth Anniversary Games held in Barbados last week. The Campus’s athletics team won the overall athletics championships, beating the Cave Hill Campus into second place. The Mona team fielded both the men’s and women’s doubles champions, Jenice Daley and Eron Samuels and finished the meet with 88 points.

Natural History Society of Jamaica

The Natural History Society of Jamaica will host a seminar on Invasion of the Green Mussel, Prena Viridis by Dr. Dunbar Steele, Department of Life Sciences, The University of the West Indies on Wednesday, June 25 at 6:00 p.m. at the PCJ Auditorium, 36 Trafalgar Road. On Saturday June 28 there will be a field trip to Moody’s Gap in Portland. The bus leaves Liguanea Club at 8:00 a.m. Contact Herman Tobisch at tel. 702-2888 or fax 970-4199 for further information.

Post Office Gate Closure

As part of ongoing efforts to improve access to the Mona Campus, the University is currently carrying out rehabilitation work at the Post Office gate. As a result, the gate will be closed to vehicular traffic until further notice. Persons are advised to follow the signs posted and the University apologises for any inconvenience caused.

Scholarships for New UWI Students

Scholarships are available to students who have gained acceptance to the UWI for the academic year 2003/2004 or who are awaiting offers of entry. These scholarships are available in the Faculties of Agriculture, Engineering, Medical Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities and Education. Application forms and terms of awards are available from the Office of Outreach and Awards, UWI, Mona. Forms may be collected during the hours 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays to Fridays.

Special Mass for Canon Ralston Smith

The UWI’s Anglican community is planning a special mass to mark the retirement of Canon Ralston Smith, Anglican Chaplain and UTC Lecturer, on Sunday July 6 at 7.15 a.m. Canon Smith’s retirement takes effect at the end of July 2003. The service will be followed by a breakfast at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge. Members and friends of the Anglican community are invited to attend these activities. Those wishing to attend the breakfast may inform Mrs. Marguerite Narinesingh at 977-4333, Miss Lorna Murray at 977-1635, or Professor Maureen Warner-Lewis at 977-5988.

The Mona School of Business

The Mona School of Business, UWI, Mona will host another in its Executive Entrepreneurial Lecture Series on Friday June 27, at 5:30 p.m. at the School of Business. The speaker will be Jennifer Samuda, CEO of Jencare Skinfarm Limited. The public is invited to attend.
