Course in International Relations and Diplomacy

The UWI Mona Campus, through the Department of Community Health and Psychiatry is the venue for a two week course in International Relations and Diplomacy organised by the Consular Corps of Jamaica and the Institute of International Relations based in Paris France.  The course was officially opened on Monday morning, June 2, by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, the Hon. K. D. Knight.  The Minister congratulated the organisers for planning such a timely and relevant programme in light of the rapidly changing environment in international relations.

Field Trip

The Jamaican Historical Society is inviting its members and their friends to a Field Trip planned for Sunday May 18. The field trip will involve visits to Bellevue, Mt. Plenty and hopefully Bromley in St. Ann. Those attending should meet at the first assembly point, in front of the supermarket in Tropical Plaza in Kingston at 8.30 a.m. and then drive to the 2nd assembly point, the JDF Headquarters in Moneague.  Participants are reminded to wear comfortable walking shoes and to travel with insect repellent and picnic lunches.

MIAS Computer Courses

The Mona Institute of Applied Sciences (MIAS) is offering a summer Information Technology package, which include “Summer’s Kool”, Introduction to Computers, Introduction to Web Page Design and Introduction to Programming.

Monroe on Corruption

Nature’s Fury, Hurricane 2003

Members of the University community are invited to a Seminar titled Nature’s Fury, Hurricane 2003 on Thursday, May 15 at 2:00 p.m. in the Assembly Hall on the Mona Campus.  The Seminar is aimed at preparing participants for the hurricane season which begins June 1.  Presenters will come from the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, the National Works Agency, UWI Maintenance Services Department, the Health Centre, Personnel Department as well as the Archives and Records Management Programme.  All are invited.

Professor Peter Fletcher

Professor Peter Fletcher, Head of the Department of Surgery, Radiology, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at UWI Mona, was recently the guest of the British Columbia Surgical Society in Canada, where he was the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Speaker.

Record Fourteen Honorary Degrees to be Conferred at UWI Graduation Ceremonies

A Record 14 Honorary Degrees will be awarded at UWI Graduation Ceremonies at Mona, Cave Hill, and St. Augustine this October and November.  Topping the list of Honorary Graduands at Mona is the Governor General of Jamaica, His Excellency the Most Honourable Sir Howard Cooke.  Sir Howard has a long and distinguished career as an Educator, Administrator, Public Servant and Lay Pastor.  He will be conferred with the honorary degree Doctor of Laws (LLD).  Dr Carlton Davis, OJ, CD will also be honoured with the Doctor of Laws (LLD) degree.

Seminar on Caribbean Reasoning

The Centre for Caribbean Thought, UWI, Mona and Africana Studies, Brown University in association with the Department of Literatures in English, UWI, Mona will host a seminar called Caribbean Reasonings.  The seminar is the second in a series of annual events to honour outstanding Caribbean intellectuals and will be held from June 5 to 7, on the Mona Campus.  This year the honoured guest is outstanding Barbadian Novelist and Social Critic George Lamming, Visiting Scholar, Duke University.  The seminar is entitled – The Sovereignty of the Imagination: the Writings and Thought of George Lam

Summer Programmes

The Language Laboratory, Department of Modern Languages and Literature, UWI, Mona will offer beginner’s Japanese and beginner’s and intermediate Spanish this summer starting May 19.  Japanese will be offered Monday to Friday from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. while beginner’s and intermediate Spanish classes will take place between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m.  Spanish will also be offered Monday to Thursday between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m.  For further information please contact Maria Alao at 927-2743.
