25 Health Leaders Graduate from CHLI

The Caribbean Health Leadership Institute (CHLI) saw twenty-five health care leaders graduating in its second cohort recently during a simultaneous video conference ceremony held with Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana, Dominica, Bahamas and Barbados.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony in her role as Valedictorian, Dr. Joy St. John, Chief Medical Officer, Barbados, Ministry of Health said that the CHLI was providing health leaders with the skills to survive and thrive.
Distinguished Mathematics Lecture
The Department of Mathematics at UWI, Mona will host a Distinguished Lecture titled “Stochastic Modelling in Finance” on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 6 pm at Chemistry Lecture Theatre (Chem 5). Professor Xuerong Mao, University of Strathclyde will deliver the lecture.
Student Awards Ceremony
The Office of Student Services and Development, UWI Mona will host the annual Student Awards Ceremony on Saturday, April 10 at 6:00 p.m. at the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona. The ceremony is designed to recognise students who have excelled in co-curricular activities, culture, service and leadership. In addition students who have attained a 3.6 and above GPA in the last academic year will be highlighted on this occasion. Senator the Hon. Marlene Malahoo Forte, Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade will be the guest speaker.
ODPEM Partners With CARIMAC To Promote Disaster Resilience

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), through the Building Disaster Resilient Community (BDRC) project, has partnered with the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) at The UWI, Mona in an effort to promote disaster resilience in Jamaica.
Lessons from the January 12th Earthquake and its Aftershocks

The Department of Geography and Geology, UWI, Mona, the Disaster Risk Reduction Centre (DRRC) along with the Jamaica Geographical Society(JGS) and the Geological Society of Jamaica(GSJ) will host a seminar titled, “Lessons from the January 12th Port-au-Prince Earthquake and its Aftershocks.” The seminar takes place on Saturday, March 12, 2010 at 9 am at the Inter-Faculty Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona. The keynote address will be delivered by Professor Grenville Draper from the Department of Earth and Environment, Florida International University, on the topic, “Tectonics and seismic risk along the Caribbean-North American Plate Boundary: The vulnerability of Jamaica, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico”.
26th Annual Elsa Goveia Lecture

The Department of History and Archaeology, UWI, Mona presents the annual Elsa Goveia Memorial Lecture on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 5 pm at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCAA), UWI, Mona. This year’s lecture is entitled “Powerless Masters: The Curious Decline of Jamaican Sugar Planters in the Foundational Period of British Abolitionism.” Professor Trevor Burnard, Professor of History of the Americas, History and Comparative American Studies, University of Warwick will deliver the Lecture.
Annual Diabetes Conference focuses on deadly relationship between Diabetes and Tobacco

The 16th annual International Diabetes Conference is scheduled for March 25 -28 at the Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort, Ocho Rios. The Conference takes place under the theme, “Diabetes and Tobacco: the Deadly Duo”. The event is organized by the University Diabetes Outreach Programme (UDOP) made up of UWI, Mona, University of Technology (UTech) and Northern Caribbean University (NCU) in collaboration with the Heart Foundation of Jamaica.
Mammogram Day at UWI, Mona on March 26

The Mobile Mammography Unit of the Jamaica Cancer Society will be conducting mammograms at the University Health Centre on Friday, March 26, 2010.Women over 40 years are encouraged to have a mammogram annually. Persons who have not had a mammogram in the last year, who are not pregnant or breast feeding are invited to make use of the opportunity.
The mammogram costs J$ 500 with Insurance Card. To make an appointment, interested persons should contact the Customer Service Clerk at the UWI Health Centre at 927-2520/970-0017 or extension 2270/2370. Spaces are limited so early booking is encouraged.
Pure and Applied Sciences Annual Awards Ceremony

The Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences will host its annual awards ceremony on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 3 pm at the New Chemistry Lecture Theatre (Chem 5). The awards ceremony is designed to recognize outstanding undergraduate students. The keynote speaker will be Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Onika Miller.
The university community is invited to attend.
UWI, Mona and CIMS Stage Seminar on Mathematics and Mathematics Education

The UWI, Mona, through the Science, Mathematics and Information Technology (SMIT) Centre in collaboration with the Caribbean Institute for Mathematical Sciences (CIMS) presents a one day seminar on Mathematics and Mathematics Education, on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 1:30 pm at the Multifunctional Room, UWI, Mona. The seminar centres around presentations on the development of the mathematical sciences in Cuba by two distinguished professors of mathematics from the Universidad de La Habana. Professor Baldomero Valino Alonso will deliver a presentation entitled, “Preparing Wide Profile Mathematicians in Cuban Universities”; Professor Jose Fidel Hernandez will deliver a presentation titled, “Algebra for Mathematicians”.
