Trends and Developments in Caribbean Libraries

The Department of Library and Information Studies in collaboration with the UWI Library, Mona will be mounting a summer workshop for senior Caribbean librarians on Trends and Developments in Caribbean Libraries. This workshop will take place on the Mona Campus from June 25 -29.

25th Annual CARIMAC Summer School

When undergraduate students retire for summer break this year, CARIMAC will welcome a new batch of students in its 25th annual Summer School Programme beginning on June 4 and running until August 25. The programme features some new courses such as Business Planning for the Self Employed, Short Feature Production for TV and Creativity Boot Camp, and some old favourites such as: Public Relations, Public Speaking and Radio Announcement and Presentation.

4th Annual Caribbean Philosophical Association (CPA) Conference

The Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy, Institute of Caribbean Studies and the Centre for Caribbean Thought, as a part of The Caribbean Philosophical Association (CPA) will host the Fourth CPA Conference, June 27-29, at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.

Caribbean Child Research Conference

The Second Research Conference on children’s issues is being hosted by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in partnership with the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), UWI, the Caribbean Child Development Centre (CCDC), UWI, the Early Childhood Commission (ECC), Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), Office of the Children’s Advocate (OCA), Jamaica Coalition on the Rights of the Child (JCRC), Child Development Agency (CDA), Child Development Research Group (CDRG) and the Ministry of Education and Youth (MoEY).

Climate Change Impacts on the Caribbean: Tourism & Insurance

The University of the West Indies, Mona and CARICOM’s Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre are jointly hosting a conference on Climate Change Impacts on the Caribbean. The conference will pay special attention to the tourism and insurance industries. In the context of the recently released report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), this conference will focus on many of the findings of direct relevance to the Caribbean, and take an assessment of our responses to these changes so far.

Condolences

The University of the West Indies extends condolences to the family and friends of the late Paul Anthony Williams (“Pinchers”) of Maintenance Services.
The Thanksgiving Service for Mr. Williams will be held on Saturday, June 2 at the Coley Mountain Missionary Church, Coley Mountain, Highgate District, Manchester at 12 noon. Interment in the family plot, Coley Mountain.

Event Planning and Management Seminar

The Reggae Studies Unit in collaboration with the Institute for Hospitality and Tourism, UWI, Mona will again be offering a seminar in Event Planning and Management on Friday, June 8 to Saturday, June 9, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily. The Seminar takes place at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre with presenter Samuel McCook, events planning and entertainment specialist.

Institute of Caribbean Studies Summer

The Institute of Caribbean Studies invites students of the University of the West Indies to register for courses being offered in Summer. These course include: FD11A - Caribbean Civilization; AR25A - Introduction to Caribbean Cultural Studies; AR25F - Caribbean Films and their Fictions; AR25R - The Culture of Rastafari; AR25S - Deconstructing the Culture of Sport; AR25X - African Religious Retentions in the Caribbean and AR35R - Rastafari in the Global Context.

New Opening Hours - UWI (Mona) & Community Co-op. Credit Union Ltd.

Please be advised that as of Tuesday May 1 the new opening hours of the UWI (Mona) & Community Co-op. Credit Union Ltd. on the Mona Campus is 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Non-Credit Foreign Language Courses

The Language Lab will offer non-credit evening courses in Spanish and French starting May 28 running until August 1.

These courses are open to persons without any previous knowledge of the subject area. Payment of course fees must be made in advance of the start date. Each course costs J$8,000. For further information please contact the Language Laboratory at 927-2743 or ext. 2382.
