Basic Research Skills Training Workshop
The Epidemiology Research Unit of the Tropical Medicine Research Institute (TMRI), UWI in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH), Jamaica and the Caribbean Health Research Council (CHRC), Trinidad and Tobago will host a Basic Research Skills Training Workshop from June 11-14. The Workshop will be hosted at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, University of the West Indies, Mona.
Climate Change Impacts on the Caribbean: Tourism & Insurance
The University of the West Indies, Mona and CARICOM’s Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre are jointly hosting a conference on Climate Change Impacts on the Caribbean: Tourism and Insurance. In the context of the recently released report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), this conference will focus on many of the findings of direct relevance to the Caribbean, and take an assessment of our responses to these changes so far.
Final Performance of Award Wining 'After Mrs. Rochester'
A final performance of “the University Players” production of 'After Mrs. Rochester' will take place at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI on Wednesday, June 6 at 8 pm.
Tickets are on sale at J$1,000 each at the Philip Sherlock Centre between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm.
Hurricane Tips
The season wears on, and we have had a close call, but not yet being hit with a hurricane. We are not out of the woods yet as the season continue through to November. Here are a few tips on what to do during a hurricane.
Stay calm, and be alert during the hurricane.
- Do not go outside during the hurricane, unless it is absolutely necessary. Flying objects may hit you and can cause serious injury or loss of life.
- Keep your radios on and listen for the latest information and bulletins
- Ensure that your refrigerated food items are used up in order to avoid spoilage
Institute of Caribbean Studies Summer Courses
The Institute of Caribbean Studies invites students of the University of the West Indies to register for courses being offered by their Department in Summer. These course include: FD11A - Caribbean Civilization; AR25A - Introduction to Caribbean Cultural Studies; AR25F - Caribbean Films and their Fictions; AR25R - The Culture of Rastafari; AR25S - Deconstructing the Culture of Sport; AR25X - African Religious Retentions in the Caribbean and AR35R - Rastafari in the Global Context.
Mona Team Wins the Inaugural First Caribbean International Bank (FCIB) & UWI Inter-Campus Case Analysis Competition
The Mona Team won first place at the recently held inaugural First Caribbean International Bank (FCIB) and UWI Inter-Campus Case Analysis Competition which took place at the Cave Hill Campus, Barbados. The team also won the prize for the Best Case Analysis. The Mona Team consisted of four Social Sciences students namely: Vanessa Hemans, Claudia Hessing, Calais Hayden and Tiffany Dunkley.
New Strategic Plan and Appointments at UWI
The University of the West Indies Council, at its May 31st – June 1st meeting approved a new Strategic Plan for the period 2007-2012. In introducing this Plan, Vice Chancellor, Professor E. Nigel Harris described it as transformative, seeking to re-position the University as “an innovative, contemporary international University, deeply rooted in the Caribbean and committed to creating the best possible future for all its stakeholders.
On-line Certificate Programme in Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment
The University of the West Indies Distance Education Centre (UWIDEC) is offering an On-line Certificate Programme in Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment, in association with the Organization of American States (OAS)/ Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) and the Faculty of Social Studies, Cave Hill. The programme commences in September 2007 and continues until August 2008. The application period is June 1- 30.
The official launch of the Programme takes place on Monday, June 11 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona.
Open Day
The Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre will host an Open Day on Wednesday, June 6 starting at 9:00 a.m. The theme will be “Living with Spinal Cord Injury”. There will be exhibitions, lectures and tours at the Centre. For further information please telephone: 927-2797.
The University Singers Concert Season 2007
The University Singers Concert Season which started on Thursday, May 31 and continues until Sunday, July 1 at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI. The show times are Thursdays – Saturdays, 8:00 pm and on Sundays 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
The 2007 Concert season features the choir presenting a wide repertoire, inclusive of classical, spiritual, gospel, folk, reggae and calypso.
