UWI Games 2007 Starts Off With A Blast
The UWI Games Opening Ceremony begins the seven days of sporting activities scheduled to take place from May 17-24, 2007 at UWI, Mona. The Ceremony will be held at the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona at 8 pm. The guest speaker will be Mike Fennel, President of the Jamaica Olympic Association and the Commonwealth Olympic Association. The Games will be declared opened by Asafa Powell, world’s fastest man. The Opening Ceremony will also feature performances from various University groups including the University of the West Indies, Mona Drum Corp and the University Singers.
“Security: A Major Challenge for Higher Education Institutions”
The Jamaica Chapter of the Association of Caribbean Higher Education Administrators (ACHEA) will be launched on Friday, May 18, at 9 am at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. Following the official launch, a Seminar addressing the theme, “Security: A Major Challenge for Higher Education Institutions” will be held.
23rd Annual Elsa Goveia Lecture
The Department of History and Archaeology presents the 23rd Annual Elsa Goveia Memorial Lecture under the theme “Taking Leave: Fugitive Slaves and the coming of the American Civil War.” The Lecture takes place on Wednesday, May 9 at 6 pm at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, Mona Campus.
Professor Richard Blackett, Andrew Jackson Professor of History, Vanderbilt University, Tennessee, USA, will deliver the Lecture.
The University community and the public are invited to attend.
CARIMAC Summer School Starts June 4
When undergraduate students retire for summer break this year, CARIMAC will welcome a new batch of students in its 25th annual Summer School Programme. The programme features some new courses such as Business Planning for the Self Employed, Short Feature Production for TV and Creativity Boot Camp, and some old favourites such as: Public Relations, Public Speaking and Radio Announcement and Presentation.
Erna Brodber’s Latest Novel - The Rainmaker’s Mistake
The Department of Literatures in English, UWI, Mona, in association with West Indian Association of Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies (WIACLALS), and the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, launches The Rainmaker’s Mistake, the fourth novel by acclaimed Jamaican writer, Erna Brodber. The Launch takes place on Wednesday, May 16 at 6.00 pm, at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts.
Haiti benefits from training under CUPIDE
Faculty, administrative staff and students at University Quisqueya (UniQ), located in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, are benefiting from training in the use of the open source learning management system (LMS), Moodle, for distance education. The training is provided through the UNESCO/UWI Caribbean Universities Project for Integrated Distance Education (CUPIDE) – a collaborative project among five universities in the region.

Please be advised that the new opening hours of the UWI (Mona) & Community Co-op. Credit Union Ltd. on the Mona Campus will be 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. effective Tuesday, May 1.
Non-Credit Foreign Language Courses
The Language Lab will offer a non-credit evening courses in Spanish and French starting May 28 running until August 1.
These courses are open to persons without any previous knowledge of the subject area. Payment of course fees must be made in advance of the start date. Each course costs J$8,000.For further information please contact the Language Laboratory at 927-2743 or ext. 2382
Regional Mathematics Symposium
The Department of Educational Studies Science and Mathematics Department, the UWI, Mona holds a Regional Symposium from May 24-25 at the Medallion Hall Hotel. The Symposium targets early childhood and primary school teachers under the theme Making Mathematics Work: Building Solid Foundations in the Early Years.”
