Passing of Clive (Bunny) Johnson

The Faculty of Social Sciences and the University of the West Indies community mourn the passing of Mr. Clive Johnson (Bunny), on Friday, April 20, 2007.

Mr. Johnson joined the Faculty of Social Sciences in 1991, where he served in the capacity of Office Attendant for 16 years. During his tenure, he was promoted in 1993 to the position of Chief Office Attendant attached to the Faculty Office. Mr. Johnson had also worked with:
• The Faculty of Medical Sciences as a Porter / Messenger in the Dean’s Office

Research Ethics Workshop

Caribbean Research Ethics Initiative Joint UWI (Mona) and University of Miami Bioethics Programme present a Research Ethics Workshop to be held on Friday, May 4 from 2-5 pm at the Rose Hall Resort, Montego Bay, Jamaica. The theme for the workshop is "Research integrity" and topics for discussion include: "Research ethics and you", "Recruitment of subjects", "Advertising in research", "Data collection and analysis" and "Authorship and publication".

SCR Tennis Tournament 2007

The Senior Common Room Club at The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus tennis tournament continues to run until Friday, May 4. The tournament started with Men’s tennis in the early ‘70s and Women’s competitions starting in 1984. Contenders include some noted national players in both the Men's and Women's tennis. This year players will compete in senior and junior categories. Players compete for a championship Cup in both the Men’s and Women’s segments.

Sir Frank Walcott Symposium

The Hugh Lawson Shearer Trade Union Education Institute and the Barbados Unit of the School of Continuing Studies in collaboration with the Barbados Workers Union, invite submissions for presentation at The Sir Frank Walcott Symposium. The symposium will be held from September 16-18 at ‘Solidarity House’ the Headquarters of the Barbados Workers Union, Bridgetown, Barbados under the theme “Celebrating a Trade Union Legend”.

The 39th Annual Conference of the Association of Caribbean Historians (ACH)

The Department of History and Archaeology, UWI, Mona will be hosting the 39th Annual Conference of the Association of Caribbean Historians (ACH) from May 6 -10. The Opening Ceremony will take place on May 6 at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona at 6 pm with the Honourable Maxine Henry-Wilson, Minister of Education and Youth, as the guest speaker.

UWI Community Mourns the Passing of Louraine Emmanuel

The UWI community mourns the passing of Mrs. Louraine Emmanuel on Sunday, April 22, 2007. Mrs. Emmanuel has been part of the UWI family and community for over twenty-five years. She started working in the Main Library at Mona in the early 1980s and in 1986, she joined Dr. Lucille Mathurin Mair to work on the first project of cooperation between the Netherlands government and the UWI which eventually led to the establishment of the Centre for Gender and Development Studies (CGDS).

Workshop on Protecting, Marketing and Licensing Research Results

The World Intellectual Property Organization will mount a workshop in Jamaica between April 30 and May 4 on the theme “Protecting, Marketing and Licensing Research Results”. Local collaborating institutions are the University of the West Indies, the Scientific Research Council, Jamaica Trade and Invest (JAMPRO), the Jamaica Intellectual Property Organization and the National Commission on Science and Technology. The venue will be the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI.

“Top A Di Top” Workshops Features Sports Stars

UWI Games and CNIS Ltd. present another “Top A Di Top” Workshop in the series this Wednesday, May 2 at 2:00 p.m. at the UWI Mona Main Playing Field. The workshop features top sports players and former sports stars in cricket, football and basketball. Presenters at the Workshop include: former West Indian Cricketer, Maurice Foster, top West Indian bowler and former West Indian Cricket Team captain, Courtney Walsh, former Jamaican Cricket Team Captain, Robert Samuels among others.

2007 Principles and Practices of Social Work Course Graduation

The Graduation exercise of the 44th Regional Four Month Course in the Principles and Practices of Social Work takes place at the Social Welfare Training Centre, UWI, Mona on Thursday, April 26 at 5:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Claudette Richardson-Pious, Social Worker, Executive Director, Children First, Spanish Town, St. Catherine.

The Social Welfare Training Centre (SWTC) of the School of Continuing Studies, the University of the West Indies organizes the Regional Four Month Course annually.
