MonaGo App Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

The University of the West Indies, Mona campus ("us", "we", or "our") operates the “UWIMona Mobile” mobile application (the "Service"). This policy addresses the collection, use, storage, and disclosure of personal data processed by the Service and the choices you (the data subject) have (has) associated with those data.

This Policy may be updated periodically. You are encouraged to review the policy periodically to check for changes and updates.

2. Scope

This Policy covers all personal data processed by the Service. Personal data refers to any information relating to a living individual, or to an individual who has been deceased for less than thirty years, who is, or can be identified from the data, whether by itself or combined with other information which is in, or is likely to come into the possession of the University. Personal data includes information in the form of photographs, audio and video recordings, and text messages.

3. Information Collection and Use

We collect several different types of information for various purposes to provide and improve our Service to you. Information is collected directly from you when you install the app and register for an account to use the app.
We use your personal data to provide and improve the Service. By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Policy.

4. Types of Personal Data Collected

Personal Data

While using our Service, we may ask you to provide us with certain personally identifiable information that can be used to contact or identify you ("Personal Data").
Personally identifiable information may include, but is not limited to:

  • Email address
  • First name and last name

4.1 Cookies

Cookies are files with small amount of data which may include an anonymous unique identifier. We also use cookies to collect your personal data. The following cookies are used by the Service:

  • Session Cookies. These are also known as transient cookies, non-persistent cookies, or temporary cookies, are necessary form the operation of the app, and only last for a session. A session starts when you launch the app and ends when you leave. Information from session cookies is stored in a temporary memory location. This information is deleted after the session ends and is never stored on your device.
  • Preference Cookies. These are also known as “functionality cookies” and they allow us to remember choices you have made in the past, like what language you prefer, what region you would like weather reports for, or what your user name and password are so you can automatically log in.
  • Security Cookies. We use Security Cookies for security purposes.

You can instruct your browser to refuse all cookies or to indicate when a cookie is being sent. However, if you do not accept cookies, you may not be able to use some portions of our Service.

4.2 Tracking Data

Tracking technologies are also used to collect and track information, and to improve and analyse the Service. These tracking technologies include beacons, tags, and scripts.

4.3 Usage Data

When you access the Service, we may collect certain information automatically, including, but not limited to, the type of mobile device you use, your mobile device unique ID, the IP address of your mobile device, your mobile operating system, the type of mobile Internet browser you use, unique device identifiers and other diagnostic data ("Usage Data")

4.4 Analytics

We may use third-party Service Providers to monitor and analyse the use of our Service.

4.4.1 Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a web analytics service, offered by Google, that tracks and reports website traffic. Google Analytics uses the data collected to track and monitor the use of our Service. This data is shared with other Google services. Google may use the collected data to contextualise and personalise the ads of its own advertising network.

4.4.2 Firebase Analytics

Firebase is analytics service, provided by Google, to track usage on apps on Android and iOS.

5. Use of personal data

The personal data collected are used:

  • to provide and maintain the Service;
  • to notify you about changes to the Service;
  • to allow you to participate in interactive features of the Service when you choose to do so;
  • to provide customer care and support;
  • to provide analysis or valuable information so that we can improve the Service;
  • to monitor the usage of the Service; and
  • to detect, prevent and address technical issues.

6. Transfer of personal data

Your personal data, may be transferred to — and maintained on computers located outside of your state, province, country or other governmental jurisdiction where the data protection laws may differ than those in your jurisdiction.
If you are located outside Jamaica and choose to provide information to us, please note that we transfer personal data, to Jamaica and process it there.
Your consent to this Privacy Policy followed by your submission of such information represents your agreement to that transfer.
No transfer of your personal data will take place to an organisation or a country unless there are demonstrated adequate controls in place to protect your personal data.

7. Disclosure of Personal Data

The UWI will not sell, disclose or otherwise distribute your personal data to third parties other than what has been stated in this Policy.

7.1 Disclosure to facilitate product improvements

The UWI may disclose information to certain third-party vendors and contractors that provide development, integration, or consulting services for the following purposes:

  1. providing you with the Service;
  2. to develop, improve and/or enhance the Service; and
  3. to fulfil any legal obligations.

7.2 Service Providers

We may employ third party companies and individuals ("Service Providers") to facilitate the Service, to provide the Service on our behalf, to perform Service-related services, or to assist us in analysing how our Service is used. These third parties will only have access to your personal data in order to perform these tasks on our behalf and are restricted from disclosing or using it for any other purpose.

7.3 Legal Obligations

The UWI may disclose your personal data in the good faith belief that such action is necessary to:

  • to comply with a court order, legislation, or legal process;
  • to respond to a government or regulatory request;
  • to protect and defend the rights or property of The UWI;
  • to prevent or investigate possible wrongdoing in connection with the Service;
  • to protect the personal safety of users of the Service or the public; and
  • to protect against legal liability

8. Security of Personal Data

The University of the West Indies, Mona will take all reasonable steps necessary to ensure that your personal data are managed securely and in accordance with this Privacy Policy
All information you provide is stored on secure servers behind firewalls. Connections to servers are also secure, using encryption and authentication, whenever administration is required.
You control some of the access to your personal data. You are obligated to keep your devices secure, keep your login credentials (user name and password) protected and confidential. If you transmit your personal data to locations outside the Service, you do so at your own risk.

9. Links to other sites

The Service may contain links to other sites that are not operated by us. If you click on a third party link, you will be directed to that third party's site. We strongly advise you to review the Privacy Policy of every site you visit.
We have no control over and assume no responsibility for the content, privacy policies or practices of any third party sites or services.

10. Children under the age of 18

The Service is not intended for children under the age of 18 ("Children").
We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you are a parent or guardian and you are aware that your child or children has provided us with personal data, please contact us at monago@uwimona.edu.jm.
If we become aware that we have collected personal data from children without verification of parental consent, we will take steps to remove that information from our servers.

11. Changes to this Policy

This Policy may be updated from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page.
We will let you know via email and/or a prominent notice on the Service, prior to changes becoming effective and update the "effective date" at the top of this Privacy Policy.
You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes. Changes to this Privacy Policy are effective when they are posted on this page.
