More than 4000 UWI Mona student to graduate in 5 ceremonies over 3 days (Nov. 3-5)

More than 4000 students from the Class of 2022 will be conferred with degrees, diplomas, and certificates by The University of the West Indies (The UWI) as the Mona Campus hosts its Face-to-Face Graduation Ceremonies from November 3-5, 2022. The Campus will, for the first time, host five (5) Ceremonies over three days - all of which will be broadcasted on UWI TV and social media.

Speaking to the return to the traditional format, The UWI Mona Campus Registrar, Dr. Donovan Stanberry said, “We recognize the sanctity of Graduation and wish to preserve it because it means so much to so many students and their families. Students, parents/guardians and well-wishers all made huge sacrifices so they may become a graduate of the UWI and so we return to the traditional way of celebrating with a view to making the day special for them.”

The Mona Campus will be hosting five ceremonies, over three days. There will be one (1) ceremony on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at 4:00 P.M., where students from the Faculty of Medical Sciences will be formally announced as graduates of The UWI.  The valedictorian addressing this ceremony will be Dr Dayna Palmer who was awarded the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) (Faculty of Medical Sciences). The University will also be conferring The Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) on Senator the Honourable Dr. Rosemary Moodie for her work in Paediatric Medicine and Philanthropy.

On Friday, November 4, 2022, at 10:00 A.M., students from Faculties of Engineering, Science and Technology, Sport and the Institute of Gender Studies will be formally announced as graduates. The Valedictorian addressing this ceremony will be Danielle Mullings who was awarded the Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering (Faculty of Science and Technology).

On Friday, November 4, 2022, at 4:00 P.M., students from the Faculty of Social Sciences, except for the Mona School of Business and Management, will be officially announced as graduates of The UWI. The valedictorian addressing this ceremony will be David Salmon who was awarded the Bachelor of Science in Public Policy Management (Faculty of Social Sciences). The University will also confer the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) on Ms. Diane Jaffee, for her work in Finance.

On Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 9:00 A.M., students from the Faculties of Humanities and Education and Law will be officially announced as graduates. The valedictorian addressing this ceremony will be Akeelia Richards who was awarded the Bachelor of Laws (Faculty of Law). Additionally, the University will confer the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters (DLitt) on Professor The Honourable Orlando Patterson, for his work as a Historical and Cultural Sociologist.

The final ceremony on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 4:00 P.M., will see students of the Faculty of Social Sciences from the Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) only be officially announced as graduates. The valedictorian addressing this ceremony will be Tamarnie Tavares who was awarded the Bachelor of Science in Operation and Management Studies (Double Major) (Faculty of Social Sciences – MSBM). The University will also confer the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) on Mr. Adam Stewart for his work as an Entrepreneur and a Philanthropist.

The UWI Honorary Degree

The UWI Honorary Degree is conferred on persons who have distinguished themselves by their substantial contribution to the development of the region and or the advancement of the University.  Individuals upon whom such a high honour has been bestowed are not referred to as “Doctor” but are entitled to use the abbreviated honorary degree behind his or her name.
